Panther (publisher)
Panther Books Ltd was a British publishing house especially active in the 1950s and 1960s, specialising in paperback fiction. It was established in May 1952 by Hamilton's Ltd and titles carried the line "A Panther Book" or "Panther Science Fiction" on the cover. Science fiction was one of its major genres; its titles included Ray Bradbury's '' The Golden Apples of the Sun'' and Asimov's Foundation Trilogy. In 1954, Gordon Landsborough was employed as editor and started improving the quality of the imprint. Instead of publishing original genre novels in paperback and hardback, Panther Books became a reprint publisher, doing paperback reprints of best-selling hardcover novels from other publishers. The quality of the cover art was improved and the list expanded to include non-fiction titles and fiction titles by internationally known, best-selling writers. Victor Gollancz
Sir Victor Gollancz (; 9 April 1893 – 8 February 1967) was a British publisher and humanitarian. Gollancz was known as a supporter of left-wing causes. His loyalties shifted between liberalism and communism, but he defined himself as a Christian socialist and internationalist. He used his publishing house chiefly to promote pacifist and socialist non-fiction, and also launched the Left Book Club. In the postwar era, he focused his attention on Germany and became known for his promotion of friendship and reconciliation based on his internationalism and his ethic of brotherly love. He founded the organisation Save Europe Now (SEN) in 1945 to campaign for humane treatment of German civilians, and drew attention to their suffering, especially children, and atrocities committed against German civilians. "Track 12" is a short story by British author J. G. Ballard, it first appeared in the April 1958 edition of ''New Worlds'' (Volume 24, Number 70). It then appeared in Penguin Science Fiction (edited by Brian Aldiss) in 1961, '' Passport to Eternity'', '' The Venus Hunters'', ''The Overloaded Man'', and later in '' The Complete Short Stories of J. G. Ballard: Volume 1''. As part of an intended anthology film the story was adapted by Harold Pinter. The adaptation was directed by Joseph Losey in 1967 and featured Dirk Bogarde and Julie Christie. An adaptation of the story was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 2016. Plot The story begins with Maxted, a run-down athlete, having been invited over to the home of Sheringham, a university professor of biochemistry.
