''The Unanswered Question: Some Intimations of the American Composer Charles Ives'' is a ballet made by Eliot Feld to Charles Ives' ''The Unanswered Question'', '' Calcium Light Night'', ''Fugue in Four Keys, Mists'', ''From the Housatonic at Stockbridge'', Sonata No. 2 for Piano and Violin (''In the Barn''), ''Remembrance'' and ''An Old Song Deranged''. The premiere took place April 30, 1988, at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, as part of New York City Ballet's American Music Festival with lighting by the Feld Ballet's Allen Lee Hughes and Willa Kim's costumes. Other works to the music of Ives in the City Ballet repertory include Peter Martins' '' Calcium Light Night'', Jerome Robbins' '' Ives, Songs'' and George Balanchine's '' Ivesiana''. Eliot Feld (born July 5, 1942) is an American modern ballet choreographer, performer, teacher, and director. Feld works in contemporary ballet. His company and schools, including the Feld Ballet and Ballet Tech, are deeply committed to dance and dance education in New York City. Feld has choreographed 149 ballets since 1967, with his work being performed by such companies as American Ballet Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, the Juilliard School, New York City Ballet, the New York City Opera, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, among many others. Life and career Feld was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Alice (née Posner), a travel agent, and Benjamin Noah Feld, an attorney. Feld attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York, and studied at the School of American Ballet and the New Dance Group, as well as with Richard Thomas and Donald McKayle. Ivesiana
''Ivesiana'' is a ballet choreographed by George Balanchine to compositions by Charles Ives. The ballet premiered on September 14, 1954, four months after Ives's death, at the City Center of Music and Drama, performed by the New York City Ballet. Balanchine made several changes to the ballet since, including adding and removing sections of the ballet, and the final version of ''Ivesiana'' consists of '' Central Park in the Dark'', ''The Unanswered Question'', ''In the Inn'' and ''In the Night''. Production Balanchine first learned about Charles Ives in 1934, despite his works being rarely performed at the time. Later, he attended a concert of Ives' works conducted by Léon Barzin. While he was fascinated, he also found Ives' works "incredibly difficult, far too complex for dancing." Albert Evans (dancer)
Albert Pierce Evans (December 29, 1968 – June 22, 2015) was an American ballet dancer and choreographer. He joined the New York City Ballet in 1988, became a principal dancer in 1995, making him the second African American dancer to hold this position, and had pursue choreography. He retired from performing in 2010, then served as a ballet master until his death. Early life Evans was born in Atlanta. He started training in ballet and modern dance after watching ''The Nutcracker'' on television. In 1986, he entered the School of American Ballet on full scholarship. Career In 1988, Evans joined the New York City Ballet. He was soon given lead roles by choreographers Eliot Feld and William Forsythe, both for NYCB's American Music Festival. Damian Woetzel
Damian Woetzel (born May 17, 1967) is an American choreographer. Woetzel was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, where he performed from 1985 until 2008. He also frequently performed with companies like the Kirov Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, until his retirement from the stage in 2008. Woetzel has also choreographed a number of ballets for NYCB and other companies. Among his awards, Woetzel has received the Harvard Arts Medal. and the inaugural Gene Kelly Legacy Award.
