The Tyrant King (film)
''The Tyrant King'' is a six-part children's serial drama directed by Mike Hodges, made by ABC Weekend TV and screened by Thames Television in 1968. Based on the book of the same name by Aylmer Hall, it was adapted for television by Trevor Preston. It was notable for its use of a progressive music soundtrack, including music from The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Cream, Pink Floyd, and in particular, The Nice, whose song "The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack", from the album of the same name was the title track. The series was shot entirely on film, as opposed to videotape, and almost entirely on location throughout London; it served as the pilot project for what became Thames' TV film production unit Euston Films. Mike Hodges
Michael Tommy Hodges (29 July 1932 – 17 December 2022) was a British screenwriter, film and television director, playwright and novelist. His films as writer/director include ''Get Carter'' (1971), ''Pulp (1972 film), Pulp'' (1972), ''The Terminal Man (film), The Terminal Man'' (1974) and ''Black Rainbow'' (1989). He co-wrote and was the original director on ''Damien: Omen II''. As director, his films include ''Flash Gordon (film), Flash Gordon'' (1980) and ''Croupier (film), Croupier'' (1998). Early life Hodges was born in Bristol on 29 July 1932, and was raised in Salisbury and Bath, Somerset, Bath. He qualified as a chartered accountant and spent two years of national service on the lower deck of a Royal Navy Minesweeper (ship), minesweeper. Euston Films is a British film and television production company. It was originally a subsidiary of Thames Television, and operated from 1971 to 1994, producing various series for Thames, which were screened nationally on the ITV network. "She's a Rainbow" is a song by the Rolling Stones and was featured on their 1967 album '' Their Satanic Majesties Request''. via the Digital Library of the University of North Texas. It has been called "the prettiest and most uncharacteristic song" that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote for the Stones, although somewhat ambiguous in intention. Composition and recording The song includes rich lyricism, vibrant piano by Nicky Hopkins, and Brian Jones' use of the Mellotron. The second verse includes: John Paul Jones, later of Led Zeppelin, arranged the strings of this song during his session musician days. Backing vocals were provided by the entire band except for Charlie Watts. Notably, all of the vocals sound like soft background singing with the music overshadowing them to the point of the lyrics being difficult to hear. "A Saucerful of Secrets" is a multi-part instrumental composition by English rock band Pink Floyd from their 1968 album of the same name. It is nearly 12 minutes long and was composed by Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and David Gilmour. The track features guitar feedback, a percussion solo section and wordless vocals. Background The track was composed by Roger Waters and Nick Mason drawing an architectural diagram for how the music should progress. David Gilmour later said he initially wasn't sure what to play. Waters remarked it was the first thing the group had recorded after Syd Barrett's departure that was any good. The group split the track into three sections that could be recorded independently and subsequently mixed together. "Astronomy Domine" (alternative "Astronomy Dominé") is a song by the English rock band Pink Floyd. The song, written and composed by the original vocalist/guitarist Syd Barrett, is the opening track on their debut album, ''The Piper at the Gates of Dawn'' (1967). The lead vocal was sung by Barrett and the keyboard player Richard Wright. Its working title was "Astronomy Dominé (An Astral Chant)". Philip Madoc (born Philip Arvon Jones; 5 July 1934 – 5 March 2012) was a Welsh actor. He performed many stage, television, radio and film roles, and was recognised for having a "rich, sonorous voice" and often playing villains and officers. Candace Glendenning
Candace Glendenning (born 9 August 1953) is a retired English actress, known for her work in the horror film genre in the 1970s as a "scream queen". She also had a career in British television throughout the late 60s to early 80s. Career Glendenning began her career as a child actress in 1968 and made her final feature film appearance in the 1976 independent horror film, '' Satan's Slave''. This turned out to be her biggest starring role, an independent and spirited young woman who, having been orphaned in a car accident, is taken in by necromancer relatives who intend to use her as a human sacrifice. Murray Melvin (10 August 1932 – 14 April 2023) was an English actor. A member of Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop company, he originated the part of Geoffrey in Shelagh Delaney's play '' A Taste of Honey'', reprising the role in Tony Richardson's 1961 film version. He appeared in several Ken Russell film and television productions including '' The Devils'' (1971) and played Reverend Samuel Runt in Stanley Kubrick's ''Barry Lyndon'' (1975).
