The Totem
''The Totem'' is a horror novel by David Morrell, first published in 1979. It was Morrell's fifth published book, preceded by three novels and one work of non-fiction. It was the author's first foray into horror, a genre that he would not revisit until ''Creepers'' in 2005. Story The novel takes place in a small Wyoming community called Potter's Field. Though normally a quiet town, Sheriff Nathan Slaughter suddenly finds himself confronted by inexplicable outbreaks of mindless violence, several bodies and the discovery of a new kind of viral infection that appears to be closely related to rabies, though it works much quicker. Along with the town coroner and an alcoholic reporter that he befriended years ago in Detroit, Slaughter attempts to save the townspeople from the cruel disease, which turns its victims into raving, uncontrollable murderers. David Morrell
David Morrell (born April 24, 1943) is a Canadian-American author whose debut 1972 novel ''First Blood (novel), First Blood'', later adapted as the 1982 First Blood, film of the same name, went on to spawn the successful Rambo (franchise), ''Rambo'' franchise starring Sylvester Stallone. He has written 28 novels, and his work has been translated into 30 languages. He also wrote the 2007–2008 ''Captain America'' comic book miniseries ''The Chosen''. Rabies is a viral disease that causes encephalitis in humans and other mammals. It was historically referred to as hydrophobia ("fear of water") because its victims panic when offered liquids to drink.
