The Torch (film)
''The Torch'' (, meaning "love is born from hate") is a 1950 Mexican/American film directed by Emilio Fernández. The film is a remake of '' Enamorada'' (1946) and is also known as ''Bandit General'' in the United Kingdom. The original script is based on William Shakespeare's ''The Taming of the Shrew''. Plot In the Mexican city of Cholula, the wedding of María Dolores Peñafiel, daughter of the successful glass manufacturer Don Carlos Peñafiel, to the American doctor Dr. Robert Stanley is prepared. When the rebel leader José Juan Reyes and his troops take Cholula, the wedding seems to be in danger. The area's wealthy families visit the Peñafiel estate. The priest Father Sierra is also there and reassures María Dolores that Reyes is an old school friend of his. Reyes imprisons many residents and even executes some. Emilio Fernández
Emilio "El Indio" Fernández Romo (; 26 March 1904 – 6 August 1986) was a Mexican film director, actor and screenwriter. He was one of the most prolific film directors of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his work as director of the film ''María Candelaria'' (1944), which won the Palme d'Or award at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. As an actor, he worked in numerous film productions in Mexico and in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Hollywood. He was the father of the Mexican actor Jaime Fernández (actor), Jaime Fernández. Eagle-Lion Films Films
Eagle-Lion Films was the name of two distinct, though related, companies. In 1944, UK film magnate J. Arthur Rank created an American distribution company with the name to handle his British films. The following year, under a reciprocal distribution arrangement with Rank, the U.S. company Pathé Exchange, Pathé Industries, which already owned the small Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC) studio, established an Eagle-Lion Films production subsidiary, while Rank's American business dropped the name. PRC, with its existing distribution exchanges, handled releases in the U.S. When PRC shut down in 1948, its distribution exchanges were assumed by Eagle-Lion Films. In 1950, Pathé merged Eagle-Lion with an independent reissues distributor, Film Classics, to create Eagle-Lion Classics. The latter was acquired by and merged into United Artists a year later. The Eastern Color Printing Company was a company that published comic books, beginning in 1933. At first, it was only newspaper comic strip reprints, but later on, original material was published. Eastern Color Printing was incorporated in 1928, and soon became successful by printing color newspaper sections for several New England and New York papers. Eastern is most notable for its production of ''Funnies on Parade'' and ''Famous Funnies'', two publications that gave birth to the American comic book industry. Eastern published its own comic books until the mid-1950s, and continued to print comic books for other publishers until 1973.
