The Stranger (1924 Film)
''The Stranger'' is a 1924 American silent drama film directed by Joseph Henabery and starring Betty Compson and Richard Dix. It is based on a 1918 novel, ''The First and the Last'', by John Galsworthy. It was produced by Famous Players–Lasky and distributed through Paramount Pictures. Plot As described in a review of the film in a film magazine, just as Keith Darrant (Stone), a high-class Englishman, has a chance for political honors, his ne'er-do-well brother Larry (Dix) appears on the scene. Larry makes the acquaintance of Peggy Bowlin (Compson), a girl who is down and out, and a strong friendship begins. After a time Larry installs the girl in a better neighborhood and just as they are preparing to marry and leave England, a convict who blames her for his having to go to jail returns, and in a fight Larry accidentally kills him. Joseph Henabery
Joseph Henabery (January 15, 1888 – February 18, 1976) was an American film actor, screenplay writer, and director. He is best known for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in D.W. Griffith's controversial 1915 silent historical epic ''The Birth of a Nation''. Early years Henabery was born in Omaha and raised in Los Angeles. He began acting as an amateur in California. Before he worked in films, Henabery worked for the San Pedro, Los Angeles, Salt Lake Railroad. When he was 25 years old, he became an extra for Universal Pictures. Career Henabery's acting career began in ''The Joke on Yellentown'' (1914). From 1914 to 1917 he appeared in seventeen films, including his portrayal of Lincoln in ''The Birth of a Nation''. Henabery also worked as a second-unit director on Griffith's ''Intolerance'' (1916), and supervised the filming of at least one extended sequence that appeared in the film. Mary Jane Irving
Mary Jane Irving (October 20, 1913 – July 17, 1983) was an American actress. She appeared in 58 films between 1917 and 1938. Biography Irving debuted in films when she was 2 years old. She "played a lot of baby roles, then disappeared from the picture." She returned to film in '' The Godless Girl'' (1928). Irving portrayed Mary in the film ''Tom Sawyer'' (1930). Her "first grown-up characterization" came in ''Arsène Lupin'' (1932). Irving's off-screen work as an adult included being the stand-in for Janet Gaynor.
