The Spieler
''The Spieler'' is a 1928 American sound part-talkie drama film directed by Tay Garnett and starring Alan Hale, Clyde Cook, and Renée Adorée. While the film had a few sequences with audible dialog, the majority of the film featured a synchronized musical score with sound effects using both the sound-on-disc and sound-on-film process. The film's sets were designed by the art director Edward C. Jewell. Plot As noted in an article regarding this film and carnivals, Cleo is a young woman who inherits a carnival from her father and announces that it will be run free from grift and rackets that target its customers. She thinks the carnival is doing so, but actually the lot is infested with every species of small time racketeer, confidence artist, and pickpocket. Tay Garnett
William Taylor "Tay" Garnett (June 13, 1894 – October 3, 1977) was an American film director, writer, and producer. He made nearly 50 films in various genres during his 55-year career, ''The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946 film), The Postman Always Rings Twice'' and ''China Seas (1935 film), China Seas'' being two of the most commercially successful. In his later years, he focused mainly on television. Early life Born and raised in Los Angeles, Garnett graduated from Los Angeles High School. Sidney D'Albrook (May 3, 1886 – May 30, 1948) was an American actor. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Harry Dahlbruck, a musician, and Jennie McGuire. He was working as an actor in Davenport, Iowa, in 1910, living with his sister Ruth and his mother Jennie. He did films in New York in the teens, and then they moved to Hollywood in 1920. At this point his brother Hal or Harold lived with them for a time. He worked in films until his death, did many character parts. Kewpie Morgan (born Horace Allen Morgan, February 1, 1892 – September 24, 1956) was an American silent film comedian who also performed in a few early sound films. He appeared in 99 films from 1915 to 1936. He appeared in the films of such comedians as Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy.
