''The Sounds of the World's Languages'', sometimes abbreviated ''SOWL'', is a 1996 book by Peter Ladefoged and Ian Maddieson which documents a global survey of the sound patterns of natural languages. Drawing from the authors' own fieldwork and experiments as well as existing literature, it provides an articulatory and acoustic description of vowels and consonants from more than 300 languages. It is a prominent reference work in the field of phonetics. Peter Ladefoged
Peter Nielsen Ladefoged ( , ; 17 September 1925 – 24 January 2006) was a British linguist and phonetician. He was Professor of Phonetics at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he taught from 1962 to 1991. His book '' A Course in Phonetics'' is a common introductory text in phonetics, and '' The Sounds of the World's Languages'' (co-authored with Ian Maddieson) is widely regarded as a standard phonetics reference. Ladefoged also wrote several books on the phonetics of African languages. Prior to UCLA, he was a lecturer at the universities of University of Edinburgh in Scotland (1953–59, 1960–61) and the University of Ibadan in Nigeria (1959–60). Click consonants, or clicks, are speech sounds that occur as consonants in many languages of Southern Africa and in three languages of East Africa. Examples familiar to English-speakers are the '' tut-tut'' (British spelling) or '' tsk! tsk!'' A lateral is a consonant in which the airstream proceeds along one or both of the sides of the tongue, but it is blocked by the tongue from going through the middle of the mouth. A fricative is a consonant produced by forcing air through a narrow channel made by placing two articulators close together. Ian Maddieson
Ian Maddieson (1 September 1942 – 2 February 2025) was a British-American Linguistics, linguist and professor emeritus of linguistics at the University of New Mexico. He is best known for his work in phonetics and phonological Linguistic typology, typology. Life and career Maddieson was born in Watford, England on 1 September 1942. After receiving a M.A. degree from SOAS University of London, SOAS, he taught for four years (1968-1971) at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria before taking a one-year position at Indiana University. Research positions on projects at University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA and Stanford University, Stanford followed. He completed a Ph.D. in linguistics at UCLA in 1977, with a dissertation entitled ''Universals of Tone: Six Studies''.
