"The Seemingly Never-Ending Story" is the thirteenth episode of the seventeenth season of the American animated television series ''The Simpsons''. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on March 12, 2006. The episode was written by Ian Maxtone-Graham and directed by Raymond S. Persi. In this episode, Lisa tells several stories to Homer after the family gets trapped in a cave. The episode contains many levels of nested storytelling, much like the novel ''The NeverEnding Story'' by Michael Ende, which the title references. Michael Andreas Helmuth Ende (12 November 1929 – 28 August 1995) was a German writer of fantasy and children's fiction. He is known for his epic fantasy '' The Neverending Story'' (with its 1980s film adaptation and a 1995 animated television adaptation); other well-known works include '' Momo'' and '' Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver''. ''The Neverending Story'' () is a fantasy novel by German writer Michael Ende, published in 1979. The first English translation, by Ralph Manheim, was published in 1983. A story within a story, also referred to as an embedded narrative, is a literary device in which a character within a story becomes the narrator of a second story (within the first one).
