''The Secret Migration'' is the sixth album by the alternative rock band Mercury Rev, released on January 24, 2005 in the UK (and a day later in the US). A limited edition of the American release of the album featured special packaging and included a bonus disc featuring b-sides, rarities, and live tracks. Jeff Mercel is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and studio musician, best known for his time in the indie rock band, Mercury Rev. Early life and education Jeff Mercel attended SUNY Fredonia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1993. In 1996, Mercel played drums with the band Grand Mal on their self-titled album released by Number Six Records. Time with Mercury Rev Mercel first played with Mercury Rev on their breakthrough 1998 album, "Deserter's Songs", playing drums, both in studio and on tour. For the band's next album, 2001's "All is Dream", his role expanded to pianos, contributing to the arranging, mixing, and producing. He stayed with Mercury Rev for the next nine years, playing on the albums "The Secret Migration" (2005), "Hello Blackbird" (2006), "Back to Mine" (2006), "Snowflake Midnight" (2008), and "Strange Attractor" (2008). Grasshopper (born Sean Thomas Mackowiak, May 25 1967) is an American musician with the band Mercury Rev. He has also appeared with Rev side-project Harmony Rockets, his own band Grasshopper and the Golden Crickets, and as a guest musician on numerous other recordings. Early years Mackowiak's early years have been colored by a 1991 interview given to music publication ''Melody Maker'', which claimed that he met Rev singer Jonathan Donahue in Camp Sunshine, a reform camp for juvenile delinquents, at the age of ten. Grasshopper was throwing dead squirrels and rats into a lawnmower when Jonathan met him. The blood spattered over a watching group of retarded kids and they screamed and yelled. Jonathan Donahue
Jonathan Daniel Donahue (born May 6, 1966) is an American rock musician. He is best known as the frontman and a founding member of Mercury Rev, with whom he has released nine studio albums since 1991. He is also a former member of The Flaming Lips and recorded two albums with the group in the early 1990s. Career Donahue helped form Mercury Rev, along with vocalist/guitarist David Baker, bassist Dave Fridmann, guitarist and clarinetist Grasshopper (born Sean Mackowiak), rooster-tail bass flutist Suzanne Thorpe, and drummer Jimy Chambers, in the late 1980s as a source to create soundtracks to the members' personal student films. The members were further encouraged to explore their talents by their mentor, minimalist composer and multimedia artist Tony Conrad. Donahue also doubled as a concert promoter in Buffalo.
