The Scene (Canadian Band)
The Scene was a short-lived Canadian psychedelic rock band who had a top 20 hit in their country in 1967 with " Scenes (From Another World)". Some members of the group later ended up in another Canadian rock band, Life. Background The Scene were a popular Montreal group. The line-up consisted of Michael Ship on keyboards, Truly Noland on guitar, Danny Zimmerman on bass and Marty Simon on drums. They released a single "Scenes (from Another World)" bw "You're In A Bad Way". The song got to #14 on the RPM Chart on December 2, 1967. Career Neil Sheppard aka Neil Ship was in New York, where he met Hank Medress and The Tokens, who owned the B.T. Puppy label. He did some studio work for them. In late 1967, he helped his brother Michael Ship to get a one-off single deal for The Scene, which led to the group recording the psychedelic rock flavored " Scenes (from Another World)" bw "You're in a Bad Way". Life was a late 1960s/early 1970s Canadian musical group who had success with the top 20 hit, " Hands of the Clock". They also charted with a cover of the Beatles’ "Strawberry Fields Forever". Background Formed from the remnants of the popular mid-1960s Canadian group The Scene, who had a hit in 1967 on the ''RPM'' chart, Life was made up of Michael Ship (Keyboards, Vocals), Marty Simon (Drums, Keyboards, Vocals), Danny Zimmerman (Bass,) Jean Pierre Lauzon (Guitar), and Barry Albert (Guitar). Lorri Zimmerman (Vocals) was with the group for a period of time. They recorded several singles and released an album. Their best success was with "Hands of the Clock". The Tokens
The Tokens were an American doo-wop band (rock and pop), band and production of phonograph records, record production company group from Brooklyn, Brooklyn, New York City. The group had four top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100, all in the 1960s, their biggest being the record chart, chart-topping 1961 hit single "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", which borrowed heavily from the 1939 song "Mbube" by South African singer Solomon Linda. They are also known for having Neil Sedaka as an original member, before he pursued a solo career. ''RPM'' ( and later ) was a Canadian music-industry publication that featured song and album charts for Canada. The publication was founded by Walt Grealis in February 1964, supported through its existence by record label owner Stan Klees. ''RPM'' ceased publication in November 2000. ''RPM'' stood for "Records, Promotion, Music". The magazine's title varied over the years, including ''RPM Weekly'' and ''RPM Magazine''. Background In 1964, Harriett Wasser came on board as the magazine's New York correspondent. She was no stranger to the music industry and she had been associated with many prominent figures in the industry that included Bobby Darin and Bob Crewe. "Hands of the Clock" was a hit for Canadian band Life in 1969. It was written and produced by Neil Sheppard. Background The group's debut single, "Hands of the Clock" bw "Ain't I Told You Before" was released on Polydor 540.009 in 1969. Both sides were written by Neil Sheppard. With a strong response to the single in the United States, it was noted in the September, 1969 issue of ''Billboard'' that it would be released in England on Polydor. Charts The single was in the Recommended Canadian Content section of ''RPM Weekly'' on May 26. It was also picking up in Montreal and Ontario. By June 9 it was charting, having just entered the Canadian Content Chart at #9. It also made its entry into the RPM100 Chart at the #100 spot.
