The Sawdust Ring
''The Sawdust Ring'' (also known as ''The Little Equestrienne'') is a 1917 American silent film, silent drama film distributed by the Triangle Film Corporation and starring Bessie Love. A shortened version of the film survives in 9.5 mm reduction print at Cineteca Nazionale, Pacific Film Archive, and the BFI National Archive. The film has also been released, in its shortened version, by Harpodeon. Plot Two children who want to become circus performers run away from home. The mother of the girl is ill and has been sent to the hospital, while the father of the boy is a junk dealer. They finally arrive at the circus of Colonel Simmonds (Jack Richardson (actor), Richardson) and obtain employment. When Janet Magie (Bessie Love, Love) falls from a horse, Simmonds learns that she is actually his daughter and through her is able to contact his wife, who had left him due to a misunderstanding. Jack Richardson (actor)
Jack Howard Richardson (November 18, 1870 – June 12, 1960) was an American actor. Background Born in New York City, he was signed to a contract in silent films in 1911 by the American Company, working there for several years. Richardson appeared in more than 560 films before his death in Santa Barbara, California. In 1911, Richardson travelled with the American Company to film westerns under the company's Flying A banner. Richardson was among a troupe of actors who were based at La Mesa, California, La Mesa who would produce an average of two western films a week. There, Richardson was regularly as a "heavy" or in villain roles. Flying A left La Mesa in 1912, but Richardson would continue to be cast as a villain in cowboy roles, such as "Scarface Jordan", in the 1925 feature Ridin' Wild (1925 film), Ridin' Wild. Alfred Hollingsworth was an American actor during the silent film era. He was in dozens of films from 1911 until 1925. He also directed four short films in 1916. '' Hell's Hinges'' has been described as a classic and Hollingsworth earned plaudits for his role in it. In 1908, he wrote ''Mills of the Gods'', a five act drama. He also wrote a play called Crisis in 1919. In 1922, he copyrighted ''Prodigal Son'', a travesty in three acts. He passed away at age 52 on June 20, 1926 at Windsor Hospital in Glendale, California.
