The Sacred Twenty
The Sacred Twenty were a group of nurses who were the first female members to ever formally serve in the United States Navy representing the Nurse Corps. Officially formed in 1908, the Sacred Twenty made broad contributions during wartime, not only including training of field nurses and disease treatment, but also providing education programs for nurses abroad and professional publications to the field of nursing. History Shortly after the formation of the Army Nurse Corps in 1901, the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) campaigned to create a similar organization for itself. Congress officially permitted the creation of the organization on 13 May 1908, where twenty women were selected as the first members. The women were required to be between the ages of 22 and 44, to be citizens of the United States, and also could not be married. American Women In World War I
World War I marked the first war in which American women were allowed to enlist in the armed forces. While thousands of women did join branches of the army in an official capacity, receiving veterans status and benefits after the war's close, the majority of female involvement was done through voluntary organizations of the war effort or through becoming a nurse for the military. Elizabeth Leonhardt
Elizabeth Leonhardt (December 7, 1867 – February 19,1953) was one of the Sacred Twenty, the first 20 nurses in the United States Navy Nurse Corps during World War I. She was the Chief Nurse of the US Navy Nurse Corps in 1919. Early life Elizabeth Leonhardt was born on December 7, 1867, in Virginia and grew up in Herndon. She was the sixth of nine children born to Jacob and Mary Leonhardt. Although on her birth certificate it reads, "Elizabeth," the name on her gravestone is, "Elisabeth." Sacred Twenty On April 26, 1911, Leonhardt arrived at the Susana Hospital in Agana. She was in charge of two nurses, Julia T. Coonan and Anna Turner. All three nurses worked primarily with women and children. Their intention was to train Chamorro women in nursing so that they would replace inefficient midwives, who were the only nurses available in Guam at the time.
