The Reflections (Detroit Band)
The Reflections are an American blue-eyed soul/doo-wop group from Detroit, Michigan, United States. They had one hit single in 1964 called "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet", written by Bob Hamilton and Freddie Gorman. The song was produced by Rob Reeco on Golden World Records. The disc reached number 6 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart, and number 9 on the ''Cash Box'' chart. The record was even more popular in rhythm and blues locations, reaching number 3 on that ''Cashbox'' chart, and was featured on ''American Bandstand'' as a "spotlight dance". A cover version by new wave band Mental As Anything hit number 27 on the Australian charts in 1980. "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet" and "Adam and Eve" were and remain popular on the Northern soul scene. After a few more records that were moderate successes on the national charts, Ray Steinberg left the group for other interests. Blue-eyed Soul
Blue-eyed soul (also called white soul) is rhythm and blues (R&B) and soul music performed by white artists. The term was coined in the mid-1960s, to describe white artists whose sound was similar to that of the predominantly black Motown and Stax record labels. Though many R&B radio stations in the United States in that period would only play music by black musicians, some began to play music by white acts considered to have "soul feeling"; their music was then described as "blue-eyed soul". 1960s Georgie Woods, a Philadelphia radio DJ, is thought to have coined the term "blue-eyed soul" in 1964, initially to describe the Righteous Brothers, then white artists in general who received airplay on rhythm and blues radio stations. The Flaming Ember
The Flaming Ember was an American blue-eyed soul band from Detroit, Michigan, United States, who found commercial success starting in the late 1960s. The group originally formed in Detroit in 1964. At that time they were known as The Flaming Embers, named for a local Detroit restaurant. They recorded for Ed Wingate's Ric-Tic label in 1967, scoring an R&B hit written by George Clinton, "Hey Mama Whatcha Got Good For Daddy." When Berry Gordy, Jr.'s Motown Records purchased Golden World Records/ Ric-Tic from Wingate, the Flaming Ember chose not to sign with Motown. In 1969, they signed with Hot Wax Records, (the label founded by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Edward Holland, Jr.), after the band had recorded for a number of smaller Detroit-area labels since 1965. Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England and the Midlands in the early 1970s. Mental As Anything was an Australian new wave and pop rock band that formed in Sydney in 1976. Its most popular line-up (which lasted from 1977 to 1999, and recorded all of its charting singles and albums) was Martin Plaza (birth name Martin Murphy) on vocals and guitar; Reg Mombassa (birth name Christopher O'Doherty) on lead guitar and vocals; his brother Peter "Yoga Dog" O'Doherty on bass guitar and vocals; Wayne de Lisle (birth name David Twohill) on drums; and Andrew "Greedy" Smith on vocals, keyboards and harmonica.
