Jay Hunt (director)
Jay Hunt (August 4, 1855 – November 18, 1932) was an American film director and actor. He directed nearly 70 films between 1911 and 1919. He continued his career as an actor until 1931. ''The White Squaw'', a 1920 film directed by Hunt, was preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2011. Formative years Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 4, 1855, Hunt began his acting career at the Arch Street Theatre in that city, where he worked for Louisa Lane Drew. Career According to the ''Hollywood Citizen-News'', during his theatrical career, Hunt "had been associated with Otis Skinner, Edwin Booth, Mme. Modjecka, the Kiralfy Bros., Maud Granger, E. H. Sothern and was for 12 years director of the Bowdoyn Square Theater at Boston, Mass." Death Following his death in Los Angeles, California on November 18, 1932, funeral services were held from him at a funeral home in that city. Gibson Gowland
Gibson Gowland (4 January 1877 – 9 September 1951) was an English film actor. Biography Gowland was born 4 January in either 1872 or 1877 in Spennymoor, County Durham. He started work as a sailor and later became the mate on a ship. For several years from the age of 25 he went to South Africa, where he hunted for big game, prospected for diamonds and also organised a theatrical company in Johannesburg, and acted in it. He prospected in Canada, where he made his debut on the legitimate stage. Gowland went to the United States from Britain by way of Canada in 1913 where he met Beatrice Bird, also from Great Britain, whom he married. They moved to Hollywood, working as bit players. In 1914 he acted in D.W. Griffith's ''The Birth of a Nation'', followed by ''Intolerance''. In 1916, his son, actor and photographer Peter Gowland, was born. John Steppling (8 August 1870 in Essen, Germany – 5 April 1932 in Hollywood, California) was a German-American silent film actor. He moved to America at a young age and entered film in 1912 aged 42. He starred in a total of 230 films between then and 1928, beginning with one of the first feature films ever made, ''Tess of the d'Urbervilles''. He is also credited with directing 7 films. He is the grandfather of playwright John Steppling.
