"The Power of Love" is a pop song co-written and originally recorded by American singer-songwriter Jennifer Rush in 1984. It was released in December 1984, by CBS Records, as the fifth single from her debut album, '' Jennifer Rush'' (1984), and has since been successfully covered by Air Supply, Laura Branigan, and Celine Dion. Recorded in Frankfurt, Germany (where Rush is based) and released in West Germany in late 1984, Rush's original version reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in October 1985 and subsequently became the biggest-selling single of the year in the UK, and the ninth best-selling single of the decade. It also topped the charts in several other European countries, as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Dion's version peaked at number one in the United States, Canada, and Australia, and hit the top ten in several more countries in 1994. Jennifer Rush (born Heidi Stern; September 28, 1960) is an American pop and rock singer. She achieved initial success during the mid-1980s with several singles and studio albums, including the million-selling single " The Power of Love", which she co-wrote and released in 1984. Her initial greatest success came in Europe. Stephen Holden (born July 18, 1941) is an American writer, poet, and music and film critic. Biography Holden earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Yale University in 1963. He worked as a photo editor, staff writer, and eventually became an A&R executive for RCA Records before turning to writing pop music reviews and related articles for ''Rolling Stone'' magazine, '' Blender'', ''The Village Voice'', '' The Atlantic'', and '' Vanity Fair'', among other publications. ''Classics'' is the ninth studio album by American singer Jennifer Rush. Having been classically trained as a singer years earlier, Rush went back to her roots in ''Classics'' and recorded a selection of her past hits with the Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra. These were vast reworkings of the songs, many of which had been originally uptempo pop tunes and were now slow and dramatic works, such as "Ring of Ice" and " I Come Undone". As well as these, four new songs were included on the collection, including the lead single, "The End of a Journey". The album was released in several European countries, reaching number 34 on the German Albums Chart.
