The Pacific Ocean (band)
The Pacific Ocean was an American indie rock band formed in 1996 and based in New York City. Edward Baluyut had left Versus in 1996 due to work and family commitments and had played drums for Connie Lovatt's band Containe that year. Shortly afterward, Connie and Edward formed The Pacific Ocean. They released their debut EP ''Birds don't think they're flying'' on Enchanté Records that same year with Edward playing both drums and guitar on the album, Lovatt on bass and lead vocals, and Patrick Ramos (his replacement in Versus) playing drums on one track. Several other songs were recorded around this time as well, though they would not be released until 1999. Drummer Steve Pilgrim joined the group in 1997, and the band played numerous shows in New York City and around the east coast, and toured with both Versus and The Magnetic Fields. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand in the early to mid-1980s. Although the term was originally used to describe rock music released through independent record labels, by the 1990s it became more widely associated with the music such bands produced. The sound of indie rock has its origins in the New Zealand Dunedin sound of the Chills, Tall Dwarfs, the Clean and the Verlaines, and early 1980s college rock radio stations who would frequently play jangle pop bands like the Smiths and R.E.M. The genre solidified itself during the mid–1980s with ''NME''s ''C86'' cassette in the United Kingdom and the underground success of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Unrest (band), Unrest in the United States. Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with a DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, Independent record label, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of ''indie pop'' has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop. A River Ain't Too Much To Love
''A River Ain't Too Much to Love'' is the eleventh studio album by Smog, released on May 30, 2005, on Domino Records in Europe and on Drag City in North America. It is Bill Callahan's final studio album released under the Smog moniker. Callahan initially wanted to release the album under his own name, but decided against doing so after pressure from Drag City. ''A River Ain't Too Much to Love'' features guest appearances by Joanna Newsom and Thor Harris of Shearwater. Music videos were produced for both "Rock Bottom Riser" and "I Feel Like the Mother of the World", the latter featuring actress Chloë Sevigny. Both videos can be found on the "Rock Bottom Riser" CD single release. Critical reception At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 76, based on 29 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".
