The Night Digger
''The Road Builder'' (U.S. title: ''The Night Digger'') is a 1971 British thriller film directed by Alastair Reid and starring Patricia Neal, Pamela Brown and Nicholas Clay. The screenplay was by Roald Dahl based on the novel ''Nest in a Fallen Tree'' by Joy Cowley, about two women who are visited by a suspicious handy man. Plot Maura Prince works part-time as a speech therapist and the rest of her time taking care of her blind, invalid mother, Edith. Billy Jarvis arrives, claiming he was sent there in place of a neighbor's nephew who was to live with the Princes and work in their garden. He ingratiates himself with Edith, who gives him Maura's bedroom and claims he must be a long-lost relative. Despite Maura's worries, Billy turns out to be a helpful assistant. While attending church with Edith, Billy notices pretty, young nursery school teacher Mary Wingate. Alastair Reid (director)
Alastair Reid (21 July 1939 – 17 August 2011) was a Scottish television and film director, described by ''The Guardian'' on his death as "one of Britain's finest directors of television drama". Early life and education Born in Edinburgh, Reid studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Career In 1964, Reid directed episodes of ''Emergency-Ward 10'' for Associated Television, ATV and worked regularly in television for over thirty years. His work included writing the screenplay of the film ''Shout at the Devil (film), Shout at the Devil'' (1976) and directing the first episode of ''Inspector Morse (TV series), Inspector Morse'' in 1987, as well as directing the television series ''Gangsters (TV series), Gangsters'' (1976—78), the serial ''Traffik'' (1989), the television series ''Selling Hitler'' (1991), based on the Hitler diaries, the miniseries ''Tales of the City (1993 miniseries), Tales of the City'' (1993), and the 1997 television a ...
