The New Standards
The New Standards is a minimalist jazz trio formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2005 and composed of Chan Poling (of The Suburbs), John Munson (of The Twilight Hours, Semisonic, Trip Shakespeare and The Flops) and Steve Roehm (of Electropolis, Rhombus and Billy Goat). With Poling on piano, Munson on bass and Roehm on vibraphone, the band reinterprets songs from a wide variety of genres, from classics like Rodgers and Hammerstein's ''My Favorite Things'' to ''London Calling'' by The Clash. In September 2005, the band released a self-titled album produced by former Trip Shakespeare / Semisonic band member, Dan Wilson. In December 2008, the band released its second album ''Rock and Roll''. In December 2012, the trio released its third album, ''Sunday Morning Coming Down''. Trip Shakespeare
Trip Shakespeare was an American Rock music, rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minneapolis, Minnesota and active from the mid 1980s to early 1990s. The band included Dan Wilson (musician), Dan Wilson and John Munson, who would later go on to be founding members of Semisonic. Origins The band originated when Harvard University English student Matt Wilson (singer), Matt Wilson (guitar/Singing, vocals) teamed up with Elaine Harris (Drum kit, drums), a Harvard grad student in biological anthropology, in the early 1980s. Daniel Dodd Wilson (born May 20, 1961) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, visual artist and record producer who has been called the songwriter's songwriter. Vibraphone
The vibraphone (also called the vibraharp) is a percussion instrument in the metallophone family. It consists of tuned metal bars and is typically played by using Percussion mallet, mallets to strike the bars. A person who plays the vibraphone is called a ''vibraphonist,'' ''vibraharpist,'' or ''vibist''. The vibraphone resembles the Marimbaphone, steel marimba, which it superseded. One of the main differences between the vibraphone and other keyboard percussion instruments is that each bar suspends over a resonator tube containing a flat metal disc. These discs are attached together by a common axle and spin when the motor is turned on. This causes the instrument to produce its namesake tremolo or vibrato effect. The vibraphone also has a sustain pedal similar to a piano. When the pedal is up, the bars produce a muted sound; when the pedal is down, the bars sustain for several seconds or until again muted with the pedal. Billy Goat (band)
Billy Goat was a band playing rock, funk and Latin styles from 1989 to 1997 that frontman Mike Dillon later described as "a funk-punk band in the vein of the Red Hot Chili Peppers". Originating in Denton, Texas, Billy Goat was popular in the Dallas and Austin scenes including Deep Ellum and became known for its wild stage antics. One published reason for disbanding was turmoil caused from a tour van crash. The Flops
The Flops were a collaboration of John Munson (bassist of Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare) and Matt Wilson (frontman of Trip Shakespeare). They played several shows, mostly in Minneapolis, between 2001 and 2005. They covered material from the Trip Shakespeare days, Matt's solo efforts (Matt's 1998 CD, ''Burnt, White, and Blue'') and some new material.
