The Native Cats are an Australian post-punk band from Hobart, Tasmania formed in 2007, consisting of frontwoman Chloe Alison Escott and bassist Julian Teakle. They are known for their 2018 album ''John Sharp Toro'', which was partly inspired by Escott's gender transition. In 2023, they released ''The Way On is the Way Off'', consisting of material written for the ''PRISM'' series of experimental shows in Hobart. "Suplex" was named one of the best Australian songs of December 2023 by ''The Guardian''. That same year, their catalogue was released on streaming services by Chapter Music. Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of music that emerged in late 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's fundamental elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Chapter Music
Chapter Music is one of Australia's longest-running independent record labels. Chapter Music has worked with a broad range of mostly Australian artists, in genres such as rock and roll, indie pop, post punk, country and western and folk. Between 1992 and 2013, the label released around 45 titles, including several compilation albums, such as ''Can't Stop It! Australian Post-Punk 1978–82'' and ''Songs For Nao''. The label's 2014 roster features bands such as Dick Diver, Beaches and Twerps. Chloe Alison Escott
Chloe Alison Escott is an Australian singer-songwriter and comedian from Hobart, Tasmania. She began her career in stand up comedy and performed at the Raw Comedy national final in 2010. She then became widely known as the frontwoman of the band The Native Cats, best known for the 2018 album ''John Sharp Toro''. During the Native Cats' live shows, she often performs with nothing but synthesiser presets on a Nintendo DS. In early 2020, she also released the solo album ''Stars Under Contract'' which featured the singles "I Know the Soul by Its Presence in Others" and "Back Behind the Eyes Again". In a positive review of ''Stars Under Contract'', ''NME'' referred to her as a polymath, "her work spanning poetry, spoken word and experimental comedy".
