The Narrow Street
''The Narrow Street'' is a 1925 American silent comedy film directed by William Beaudine and starring Matt Moore. Plot As described in a review in a film magazine, Simon Haldane (Moore), the underdog in the office of the Faulkner Iron Works is efficient but absent-minded. He is the butt of the office staff jokes, so retiring that he is afraid of his own shadow, and intensely afraid of women. Doris (Devore), seeking to escape from detectives, hides in Simon's house and the next morning he is shocked to find her. A sudden chill causes him to call the Doctor (Orlamond) for her, and this starts a fast rumor that Simon is married. All is up in the air when the office force calls in for a body. Doris has taken a liking to Simon, and breezy salesman Ray Wyeth (Butler) takes a liking to her. An office shake-up results in Simon being made the manager. William Beaudine
William Washington Beaudine (January 15, 1892 – March 18, 1970) was an American film director. He was one of Hollywood's most prolific directors, turning out a remarkable 179 feature-length films in a wide variety of genres. He is best known today for his silent films ''Little Annie Rooney (1925 film), Little Annie Rooney'' and ''Sparrows (1926 film), Sparrows'', both with Mary Pickford; the W. C. Fields comedy ''The Old Fashioned Way (1934 film), The Old Fashioned Way''; several Bela Lugosi and Charlie Chan thrillers; ''Mom and Dad (1945 film), Mom and Dad'', a sex-education exploitation film; and the popular The Bowery Boys, Bowery Boys comedies. Gertrude Short
Carmen Gertrude Short (April 6, 1902 – July 31, 1968) was an American film actress of the silent and early sound era. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1945. Biography Gertrude Short was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of actors Lewis and Stella Short. From 1913 to 1945, she acted on stage, on film, and in vaudeville. Short debuted on stage in ''The Story of the Golden Fleece'' in San Francisco when she was 5 years old. In her screen debut, she portrayed Little Eva in the silent film ''Uncle Tom's Cabin''. She went on to act in films through the 1930s and into the 1940s. Film companies with which she worked included Edison, Metro, Paramount, Robertson-Cole, and Universal. Short's Broadway credits include ''Arrest That Woman'' (1936). She stopped acting during World War II and went to work for Lockheed Corporation, from which she retired in 1967. Edward Everett Horton, Jr. (March 18, 1886 – September 29, 1970) was an American character actor and comedian. He had a long career in film, theater, radio, television, and voice work for animated cartoons. Early life Horton was born March 18, 1886, on Long Island to Edward Everett Horton, a typesetter / compositor in the press room for ''The New York Times'', and his wife, Isabella S. (née Diack) Horton. His father was of English and German ancestry, and his mother was born in Matanzas Province, Cuba, to George and Mary (née Orr) Diack, natives of Scotland. He first attended the old Boys' High School in Brooklyn. The family then moved to Baltimore, Maryland and he went to The Baltimore City College. William Orlamond
William Anderson Orlamond (1 August 1867 – 23 April 1957) was a Danish-American film actor. Orlamond appeared in more than 80 films between 1912 and 1938. Orlamond delivered his finest performance in director Victor Sjöström’s masterpiece '' The Wind'' (1928) in the supporting role of “Sourdough.” Early life Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, little is known about Orlamond’s antecedents except that he was born into a family of itinerant actors. He and his brother, Fritz, were included in the traveling acts virtually from infancy. When in his early 20s, he was supporting himself in Germany as a “dialect comedian.” Film career The date of Orlamond's emigration to the United States is unclear, but by 1912 he was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania working in one-reelers for Siegmund Lubin and appearing in Pathé and Edison Studios production shorts.
