BBC Radio 4 is a British national radio station owned and operated by the BBC. The station replaced the BBC Home Service on 30 September 1967 and broadcasts a wide variety of spoken-word programmes from the BBC's headquarters at Broadcasting House, London. Since 2019, the station controller has been Mohit Bakaya. He replaced Gwyneth Williams, who had been the station controller since 2010. Mark Steel
Mark Steel (born 4 July 1960) is an English author, broadcaster, stand-up comedian and newspaper columnist. He has made many appearances on radio and television shows as a guest panellist, and has written regular columns in ''The Guardian'', ''The Independent'' and ''Daily Mirror''. He presents ''The Mark Steel Lectures'', ''The Mark Steel Solution'', ''Mark Steel's in Town'' and the podcast ''What the fuck is going on?'' Early life Steel was born in Swanley, Kent. He was adopted 10 days after he was born. His adoptive father worked in insurance and his mother was a housewife who supplemented the family's income through factory work and working as a lollipop lady. He had a close relationship with his adoptive parents. Martin Hyder
Martin Hyder (born 1961) is an English actor and writer. Profile Hyder was educated at Abingdon School leaving in 1980. He has worked closely with the BBC since 2000 contributing and appearing in BBC Radio and BBC Television. His television credits include The Lenny Henry Show, The Omid Djalili Show, Ruddy Hell! It’s Harry and Paul, Harry Hill's TV Burp and he has appeared on many successful BBC radio shows. In addition he has appeared on stage and in film, most recently he had a role in the 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow and performed on stage in the plays 'Dead Dog in a Suitcase' in 2015 and 'My Brilliant Friend' at the Rose Theatre, Kingston in 2017. Carla Mendonça
Carla Mendonça (born 1961) is a British actress. She is known for playing Orla Crawshaw in ''Coronation Street'', Sophie Johnson in the CITV children's sitcom ''My Parents Are Aliens'' (2001–2006) and Mrs. Fitzgerald in the CBBC series '' So Awkward'' (2015–2018). She has a degree in Theatre Studies and Dramatic Art from the University of Warwick. Personal life Mendonça was born in Coventry, West Midlands. Phil Clarke (TV Producer)
Philip Brian Clarke (born 14 May 1961) is a British television comedy producer and executive. He has produced or executive produced many popular British TV comedy programmes including ''Peep Show'', ''Brass Eye'', ''Never Mind the Buzzcocks'' and '' Big Train''. In 2012 Clarke became Head of Comedy at Channel 4. In 2017 he founded the independent television production company Various Artists Ltd (VAL), along with co-directors Jesse Armstrong, Sam Bain and Roberto Troni. Sexual Revolution
The sexual revolution, also known as the sexual liberation, was a social movement that challenged traditional codes of behavior related to sexuality and interpersonal relationships throughout the Western world from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Sexual liberation included increased acceptance of sexual intercourse outside of traditional heterosexual, monogamous relationships, primarily marriage. The legalization of the pill as well as other forms of contraception, public nudity, pornography, premarital sex, homosexuality, masturbation, alternative forms of sexuality, and abortion all followed. The Russian Revolution was a period of political and social change in Russia, starting in 1917. This period saw Russia abolish its monarchy and adopt a socialist form of government following two successive revolutions and a civil war. Evolution
Evolution is the change in the heritable Phenotypic trait, characteristics of biological populations over successive generations. It occurs when evolutionary processes such as natural selection and genetic drift act on genetic variation, resulting in certain characteristics becoming more or less common within a population over successive generations. ''The Mark Steel Lectures'' are a series of radio and television programmes. Written and delivered by Mark Steel, each scripted lecture presents arguments for the importance of a historical figure. History The lectures were originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4 over three series between 1999 and 2002. Many of the arguments were illustrated by miniature sketches. These sketches featured Mark Steel, Martin Hyder, Mel Hudson, Carla Mendonça, Femi Elufowoju Junior and Debbie Isitt. The first series was subtitled "A series of lectures about Englishmen who changed the course of history", with the remaining two changing this to "A series of lectures about people with a passion". The first series was produced by Phil Clark; the others by Lucy Armitage. The lecture on Ludwig van Beethoven (2003) was nominated for a Sony Radio Comedy Award.
