''The Mapmaker'' is a 1957 British radio play by Rex Rienits. It dramatised the life of Matthew Flinders. The play premiered on the BBC and was later produced in Australia on commercial radio. Rex Rienits
Rex Gunther Rienits (17 April 1909 – 30 April 1971) was an Australian writer of radio, films, plays and TV. He was a journalist before becoming one of the leading radio writers in Australia. He moved to England in 1949 and worked for a number of years there. He later returned to Australia and worked on early local TV drama. According to Richard Lane Rienits "was the most affable and generous of men; warm in his friendships, generous with his time and in his efforts to help those still with the ladder to scale. Above all, he was utterly dedicated to the propagation of Australian history, art and playwriting." Early life and career Rienits was born in Dubbo. His father was a draughtsman for the Lands Department and moved from town to town early in Rienits' life. His mother died in 1925 and Rienits had one brother, Don. Captain (Royal Navy), Captain Matthew Flinders (16 March 1774 – 19 July 1814) was a British Royal Navy officer, navigator and cartographer who led the first littoral zone, inshore circumnavigate, circumnavigation of mainland Australia, then called New Holland (Australia), New Holland. He is also credited as being the first person to utilise the name ''Australia'' to describe the entirety of that continent including Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), a title he regarded as being "more agreeable to the ear" than previous names such as ''Terra Australis''. Flinders was involved in several voyages of discovery between 1791 and 1803, the most famous of which are the circumnavigation of Australia and an earlier expedition when he and George Bass confirmed that Van Diemen's Land was an island. Biography Early life and career Chater was born in Bayswater, West London and attended Cottesmore School as a child, his mother was born in Shanghai. He attended Cambridge University to study medicine but did not finish his degree, instead taking part in many student revues. Chater, having arrived in Australia post World War II, came to prominence as a stage and radio actor, and was a cast member of the 1963 Sydney season of Chekhov's ''The Cherry Orchard'', the debut production by the Old Tote Theatre Company, the precursor to the Sydney Theatre Company. ''The Queanbeyan Age'' is a weekly newspaper based in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia. It has had a number of title changes throughout its publication history. First published on 15 September 1860 by John Gale (journalist), John Gale and his brother, Peter Francis Gale, ''The Golden Age (newspaper), The Golden Age'', as it was known at the time, was the first newspaper of the small township on the banks of the Queanbeyan River. It was named due to the short-lived Kiandra goldrush, which generated large amounts of gold-based traffic through the region. The ''Age'' published in 32 to 48 page editions on Fridays. Previously it published twice a week, and prior to that three times a week.
