This season of the series explores Dobie Gillis' life as a junior at Central High School, and is the only season of the series to feature Tuesday Weld and Warren Beatty among the cast. Broadcast history The season originally aired Tuesdays at 8:30-9:00 pm (EST) on CBS from September 29, 1959, to July 5, 1960. Nielsen ratings The season was not ranked in the Top 30 shows. ''The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis'' (also known as simply ''Dobie Gillis'' or ''Max Shulmans Dobie Gillis'' in later seasons and in syndication) is an American sitcom starring Dwayne Hickman that aired on CBS from September 29, 1959, to June 5, 1963. The series was adapted from the Dobie Gillis short stories written by Max Shulman since 1945 and first collected in 1951 under the same title as the subsequent TV series, which drew directly on the stories in some scripts. Shulman also wrote a feature-film adaptation of his Dobie Gillis stories for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1953, titled ''The Affairs of Dobie Gillis'', which featured Bobby Van in the title role. Hickman in ''Dobie Gillis'' was among the first leads to play a teenager on an American television program. Doris Packer (May 30, 1904 – March 31, 1979) was an American actress, possibly best known for her recurring role as Mrs. Cornelia Rayburn, Theodore Cleaver's elementary school principal in the television series, ''Leave It to Beaver''. Packer portrayed the mother of millionaire playboy Chatsworth Osborne, Jr. on CBS's '' The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis''. Charles Lane (born Charles Gerstle Levison; January 26, 1905 – July 9, 2007) was an American character actor and centenarian whose career spanned 76 years. A prolific actor who played hundreds of roles in both film and TV, Lane often played sour, scowling and disagreeable clerks, doctors, judges, and middle-management authority figures. Recalling in 1981 his many roles, he said "They were all good parts, but they were jerks. If you have a type established, though, and you're any good, it can mean considerable work for you." Richard Michael Wessel (April 20, 1913 – April 20, 1965) was an American film actor who appeared in more than 270 films between 1935 and 1966. He is best remembered for his only leading role, a chilling portrayal of strangler Harry "Cueball" Lake in '' Dick Tracy vs. Cueball'' (1946), and for his appearances as comic villains opposite The Three Stooges. Maximilian Shulman (March 14, 1919 – August 28, 1988) was an American writer and humorist best known for his television and short story character Dobie Gillis, as well as for best-selling novels. Biography Early life and career Shulman was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and raised in the city's Selby-Dale neighborhood. His father Abraham, a house painter, and his mother Bessie Karchmar were Jewish immigrants from Belarus. As a student at the University of Minnesota, where he was classmate of Thomas Heggen, Thomas R. St. George and Norman Katkov, Shulman wrote a column for the Minnesota Daily as well as pieces for '' Ski-U-Mah'', the college humor magazine. His writing humorously exaggerated campus culture.
