The Last Kinection
The Last Kinection is an Indigenous hip-hop group from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The band was formed in 2006 by Joel Wenitong, DJ Jay Tee (both from Local Knowledge) and Naomi Wenitong (Shakaya). The Last Kinection first came to attention with its reworking of the Peter Allen song, "I Still Call Australia Home". History Elefant Tracks In June 2010, The Last Kinection was officially signed to Independent, Sydney record label Elefant Traks who released the band's second album, ''Next of Kin'', in 2011. Touring In 2009, the band supported Public Enemy. They followed this up with a national tour beginning in July. Accident In September 2008, the band was involved in a car accident, with Naomi Wenitong and DJ Jay Tee receiving serious injuries. And their other member had died in the accident. Local Knowledge (band)
Local Knowledge were an Indigenous hip-hop group from Newcastle, New South Wales.They were formed in 2002 by brothers Abie and Wok Wright and Joel Wenitong with DJ Jay Tee joining later. They disbanded in 2006. After the breakup Joel, his sister Naomi from Shakaya and DJ Jay Tee formed The Last Kinection while Abie and Wok have formed Street Warriors. Local Knowledge won a Deadly Award in 2005 for Band of the Year and a Musicoz award for Indigenous Band of the Year. Shakaya are an Australian girl group formed in Cairns, Queensland in 2002 by Simone Stacey and Naomi Wenitong. Naomi Sky Wenitong (born 1982) is an Australian singer-songwriter based in Cairns, Queensland. Under the name, Nay, she is a member of hip hop group, The Last Kinection, alongside her older brother, Joel "Weno" Wenitong, and Jacob "DJ Jaytee" Turier. Previously Wenitong was a member of pop girl duo Shakaya (2001–2006) with Simone Stacey. Biography Naomi Sky Wenitong was born in 1982 in Cairns, Queensland to a large extended family belonging to the Kabi Kabi people of South East Queensland. Her father, Mark Wenitong, is a medical practitioner. He became head of the Australian Indigenous Doctor's Association. Her mother, Deb Sisson, studied art. Both her parents were also in bands. Peter Allen (born Peter Richard Woolnough; 10 February 1944 – 18 June 1992) was an Australian singer-songwriter, musician and entertainer, known for his flamboyant stage persona, boundless energy, and lavish costumes. "I Still Call Australia Home" is a song written by Peter Allen in 1980. In it, Allen sings of Australian expatriates' longing for home. Significance to Australian culture It has been used to signify Australian patriotism and nostalgia for home. An example is the series of Qantas television commercials where it was sung either by individual Australian musicians or one of several Australian youth choirs. This is also remade in their 2020 safety video, where various covers of the song were made accompanying a 100-year history visualization. In the 1984 Summer Olympics' ''Opening Gala'' TV special (in Los Angeles), Olivia Newton-John performed this song from Sydney, Australia with the choir in a medley with "Waltzing Matilda." Elefant Traks is a record label based in Sydney, Australia, that predominantly releases Australian hip hop music. The label is distributed in Australia by Inertia Distribution. History 1998–2008: Formation, The Herd, Urthboy, Horrorshow Elefant Traks was started in 1998 by Kenny Sabir ( Traksewt); Under Sabir's management, the label's first official compilation album, ''Cursive Writing'', was released, and Sabir briefly explained the process in 2011: "For the first compilation, some of the people on there I had never actually even met at the time of release.
