The Last Hangman
''Pierrepoint'' is a 2005 British film directed by Adrian Shergold about the life of British executioner Albert Pierrepoint. The film premiered at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival and was released in the UK on 7 April 2006. In the United States, it had a limited theatrical release at three screens on 7 June 2007, grossing $21,766. It was released on DVD on 30 October 2007. Commissioned as a television film in 2004, ''Pierrepoint'' was broadcast on ITV on 25 August 2008, when it attracted an estimated audience of 3.6 million. The film was renamed ''Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman'' for its North American release, although Pierrepoint was not the last British hangman. Premise The film is loosely based on the life of Britain's most prolific hangman, Albert Pierrepoint (played by Timothy Spall), from the time he is trained for the job and accepted onto the list of the country's official hangmen in 1932 until his resignation in 1956. Violet Van Der Elst
Violet Van der Elst (4 January 1882 – 30 April 1966) was a British entrepreneur and campaigner best remembered for her activities against the death penalty. Biography She was born Violet Anne Dodge, the daughter of a coal porter and a washerwoman, she herself worked as a scullery maid. In 1903, she married Henry Arthur Nathan, a civil engineer 13 years her senior. She developed cosmetics including Shavex, the first brush-less shaving cream and became a successful businesswoman. After her first husband died on 15 November 1927, she married Jean Julien Romain Van der Elst, a Belgian who had been working for her as a manager but was also a painter. Having amassed a huge personal fortune she purchased Harlaxton Manor, in Lincolnshire, England in 1937. She restored the house, having renamed it Grantham Castle, and had it wired for electricity. Ian Shaw (singer)
Ian Shaw (born 2 June 1962) is a British jazz singer, broadcaster, record producer, actor and comedian. Shaw was born in St. Asaph, Wales. At eighteen he moved to London where he studied music at King's College London. His career in performance began in the 1980s working in piano bars in the UK and abroad, both solo and as a duo with composer Andrew Phillips (guitar). On the alternative cabaret circuit, he appeared alongside such performers as Julian Clary, Rory Bremner, and Jo Brand. Mary Jo Randle (born 26 April 1954) is an English actress from Rochdale, Lancashire working in theatre and television. Dorothea Waddingham
Dorothea Nancy Waddingham (21 June 1899 – 16 April 1936) was an English nursing home matron who was convicted of murder. Life Dorothea Waddingham was born Dorothy Nancie Merelina Allan Chandler, with her parents marrying a year after her birth – Waddingham being her father's surname. Dorothea was born on a farm near Nottingham. She has been referred to as "Nurse" Waddingham because the two murders she was accused and convicted of were committed in a nursing home she ran near Nottingham in England. However, she was not a qualified nurse and the only medical training she received was as a ward-maid at an infirmary near Burton-on-Trent. Josef Kramer (10 November 1906 – 13 December 1945) was a in the SS and the Commandant of Auschwitz-Birkenau (from 8 May 1944 to 25 November 1944) and Bergen Belsen (from December 1944 to its liberation on 15 April 1945) concentration camps. Timothy Evans
Timothy John Evans (20 November 1924 – 9 March 1950) was a Welsh lorry driver who was wrongfully accused of murdering his wife Beryl and infant daughter Geraldine at their residence in Notting Hill, London. In January 1950, Evans was tried and convicted of the murder of his daughter, and on 9 March he was executed by hanging. During his trial, Evans accused his downstairs neighbour, John Christie, who was the chief prosecution witness in the case against him, of committing the murders. Three years after Evans's execution, Christie was found to be a serial killer who had murdered several other women in the same house, including his own wife Ethel.
