The Hunters (1957 Film)
''The Hunters'' is a 1957 ethnographic film that documents the efforts of four !Kung men (also known as Ju/'hoansi or Bushmen) to hunt a giraffe in the Kalahari Desert of Namibia. The footage was shot by John Marshall during a Smithsonian-Harvard Peabody sponsored expedition in 1952–53. In addition to the giraffe hunt, the film shows other aspects of !Kung life at that time, including family relationships, socializing and storytelling, and the hard work of gathering plant foods and hunting for small game. The film was produced at the Film Study Center of the Peabody Museum at Harvard University by John Marshall in collaboration with Robert Gardner. It won the 1957 Robert J. Flaherty Award for best documentary film from the City College Institute of Film Technique, New York, and was named to the US National Film Registry by the Librarian of Congress in 2003 for its "cultural, aesthetic, or historical significance". The Hunters (instrumental Band)
The Hunters were a British instrumental band from the late 1950s to early 1960s. Originating from the Cheshunt area of Hertfordshire and formed from the remnants of The Parker Royal Five, The Hunters found work as a backing group for touring US stars such as Bobby Rydell, Jimmy Jones in the UK, and British-based artists The Allisons, Frank Ifield, The Avons, Mark Wynter, Kenny Lynch and Michael Cox. Their first major hit was "Sweet Dreams" on the Columbia label as the backing band to singer Dave Sampson, which reached No. 29 in May 1960. Sampson had written the song whilst at the ''Curry Bazaar Indian Restaurant'' in Wardour Street, London West End in October 1959 with friend and neighbour Cliff Richard in mind but record producer Norrie Paramor thought that the song would suit Sampson more. The Hunters are a Canadian punk rock band from Quebec City. Since their formation in 2006, The Hunters have toured extensively in Canada, as well as the US East Coast and Europe. History Their first full-length, ''Dissent Lasts...'', has been released independently in 2008. In June 2010, Alexandre Hébert-Vincent was replaced by Danahé Rousseau-Côté on the guitar. On March 8, 2012, Stomp Records announced they were adding the band to their roster and releasing the second album, ''Promises'', on April 17. The music video for the first single off ''Promises'', "Van Party Forever" was released on June 5 and features the band playing with The Sainte Catherines during their farewell tour. John Anthony Flanagan (born 22 May 1944) is an Australian fantasy author best known for his medieval fantasy series, the ''Ranger's Apprentice'' series, and its sister series, the '' Brotherband Chronicles.'' Some of his other works include his ''Storm Peak'' duology, as well as the adult novel ''The Grey Raider.'' Early life and careers John Flanagan was born in Sydney, Australia on 22 May 1944. He graduated from Waverley College with plans to become a writer. As he grew up, he changed careers and got a job at an advertising agency. He originally planned to become a trainee copywriter, but the agency instead assigned him to train as a media researcher. The Hunters (novel)
''The Hunters'' is James Salter's debut novel and a tale of USAF fighter pilots during the Korean War, first published in 1956. The novel was the basis for the 1958 film adaptation of the novel starring Robert Mitchum and Robert Wagner with a different storyline. Under his birthname James A. Horowitz, Salter himself was a fighter pilot with the rank of captain who saw combat from February to August 1952. He kept a detailed diary of his tour and the novel closely follows a chronology of events he experienced as an F-86 Sabre pilot with the 4th Fighter-Interceptor Wing, based at Kimpo Air Base, Korea. Salter was 31 when he published the novel and made his protagonist the same age. He describes 31 as being "the end for him" as a fighter pilot: "...not too old, certainly; but it would not be long. ''Wings'' is a drama series about the Royal Flying Corps that ran on BBC television from 1977 to 1978. It stars Tim Woodward as Alan Farmer, a young blacksmith turned fighter pilot in the First World War. Nicholas Jones played his teacher and mentor, Captain Triggers and Michael Cochrane played his upper-class friend, Charles Gaylion, who began a relationship with Farmer's girlfriend while Farmer was believed dead, shot down over France. The series reveals that the British pilots are struggling with aeroplanes which are unreliable and inferior to the German machines and with an Establishment that classes voicing an opinion to that effect as being tantamount to cowardice. The airmen must also face the resentment of British soldiers who see them having an "easy" life.
