The Hero System Bestiary
''The Hero System Bestiary'' is a supplement published by Hero Games in 1986 to provide a variety of creatures for superhero, espionage and fantasy role-playing games that use the '' Hero System'' rules. As new editions of the Hero System rules were published, new editions of the ''Bestiary'' were also published. Denis Loubet
Denis Loubet is an artist who has worked on several pen-and-paper role-playing games and video games, including the MMORPG ''Ashen Empires''. Career Loubet designed a set of miniatures called ''Cardboard Heroes'' (1980), a set of full-color cardboard figures for use in fantasy roleplaying games, published by Steve Jackson Games. Several more ''Cardboard Heroes'' sets were produced by Loubet, Jennell Jaquays, and Jeff Dee. Richard Garriott commissioned Loubet to paint the cover of Garriott's game ''Ultima I'' (1980), and Loubet painted many other covers for Garriott's games thereafter. ''White Wolf'' is a game magazine that was published by White Wolf Publishing from 1986 to 1995. History While still in high school, Stewart Wieck and Steve Wieck decided to self-publish their own magazine, and Steve chose the name "White Wolf" after Elric of Melniboné. ''White Wolf'' #1 was published by their White Wolf Publishing in August 1986 and distributors began to order the magazine a few issues later as its print runs continued to increase. In 1990, Lion Rampant and White Wolf Publishing decided to merge into a new company that was simply called "White Wolf", and in an editorial in the magazine Stewart Weick explained that the magazine would remain independent despite the company's interest in role-playing production. ''Abyss'' was a gaming magazine first published in 1979, edited by Dave Nalle and published by Ragnarok Games. It was headquartered in Washington, D.C. Contents ''Abyss'' was a bimonthly zine-type magazine focusing on fantasy role-playing games including '' New Ysgarth Rules'' (also published by Ragnarok Games) and ''Dungeons & Dragons''. Each issue was twenty offset pages in length, with a reported circulation of about 175. Regular content included new fantasy monsters, character classes, magic items and spells; opinion pieces; and in every other issue, a mini-adventure. TSR (company)
TSR, Inc. was an American game publishing company, best known as the original publisher of ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (''D&D''). Its earliest incarnation, Tactical Studies Rules, was founded in October 1973 by Gary Gygax and Don Kaye. Gygax had been unable to find a publisher for ''D&D'', a new type of game he and Dave Arneson were co-developing, so founded the new company with Kaye to self-publish their products. Needing financing to bring their new game to market, Gygax and Kaye brought in Brian Blume in December as an equal partner. ''Dungeons & Dragons'' is generally considered the first tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG), and established the genre. Allen Varney
Allen Varney (born 1958) is an American writer and game designer. Varney has produced numerous books, role-playing game supplements, technical manuals, articles, reviews, columns, and stories, as well as the fantasy novel ''Cast of Fate'' ( TSR, 1996). Since the 1990s, he has worked primarily in computer games. Early life Varney was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was raised by his mother, Marcelene Varney. He graduated from Reno High School in 1976 and has a dual B.A. in English and history from the University of Nevada, Reno. ''The Space Gamer'' was a magazine dedicated to the subject of science fiction and fantasy board games and tabletop role-playing games. It quickly grew in importance and was an important and influential magazine in its subject matter from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. The magazine is no longer published, but the rights holders maintain a web presence using its final title ''Space Gamer/Fantasy Gamer''. Darren Watts (February 17, 1969 – December 31, 2022) was an American game designer who was one of the founders (along with Steve Long) of DOJ Inc. and the president of Hero Games, publishers of roleplaying games using the Hero System such as ''Champions'', ''Fantasy Hero'' and '' Star Hero''. He contributed to multiple conventions for Double Exposure, podcasts such as Explain This, Comics Guys!, and wrote, contributed, and edited many other RPGs. ''Hero System Bestiary'' is a compilation of creatures for use with Hero System role-playing game rules. It takes the form of a bestiary. It was published in 2002 for the 5th edition Hero System release. The cover is thick paper and illustrated in color, while the interior is 239 pages in length and illustrated in black and white. An earlier edition of '' The Hero System Bestiary'' was published in 1992 for the prior edition of Hero. This work is divided into four chapters and an appendix. The first chapter gives an overview of creatures in a role-playing game, along with descriptions of the game system statistics and how creatures are created using the Hero System point build method. Roger Raupp
Roger Raupp (born October 1, 1963 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin) is an artist whose work has appeared in games such as the '' Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game from TSR, and the collectible card game '' Magic: the Gathering'' from Wizards of the Coast. Early life According to Roger Raupp, he "was into science fiction as a kid, but my parents were quite conservative and thought I was a little nuts. They wanted me to work on the farm, not sit around and read comic books and watch Godzilla movies all day."
