The Heliocentrics
The Heliocentrics are an English, London-based musical collective that combines funk, jazz, psych, and library influences. The group is based around drummer and producer Malcolm Catto, bassist Jake Ferguson, guitarist Adrian Owusu, and multi-instrumentalist Jack Yglesias. History The Heliocentrics released their debut album ''Out There'' in 2007 on Now-Again Records. This was followed by collaborations with Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke on the album ''Inspiration Information'' (2009), which was awarded that year's Worldwide Winners, Gilles Peterson Worldwide Winner Album of the Year award, ''Lloyd Miller & The Heliocentrics (OST)'' (2010), and Orlando Julius. Mulatu Astatke
Mulatu Astatke (; French pronunciation: Astatqé; born 19 December 1943) is an Ethiopian musician and arranger considered as the father of "Ethio-jazz". Born in Jimma, Mulatu was musically trained in London, New York City, and Boston where he combined his jazz and Latin music (genre), Latin music interests with traditional Ethiopian music. Mulatu led his band while playing vibraphone and conga drums—instruments that he introduced into Ethiopian popular music—as well as other percussion instruments, keyboards, and organs. His albums focus primarily on instrumental music, and Mulatu appears on all three known albums of instrumentals that were released during the Ethiopian Golden Age of music, Ethiopian Golden Age of Music in 1970s.. ''Jaiyede Afro'' is a collaborative studio album by Nigerian musician Orlando Julius and English band the Heliocentrics. It was released on 9 September 2014 through Strut Records. It peaked at number 13 on the ''Billboard'' World Albums chart. It received generally favorable reviews from critics. Background Orlando Julius' studio album, ''Super Afro Soul'' (1966), was re-released in 2000 through British record label Strut Records. Lloyd Miller (musician)
Lloyd Miller (November 11, 1938 – December 27, 2024) was an American jazz musician. He was known for his research in Persian and Afghan music. He was proficient in several instruments across jazz, ethnic, and world music traditions. Miller was a scholar of Persian music, earning a doctorate in Middle East Studies and authoring several works on Persian and Afghan musical traditions. His publications include ''Music and Song in Persia: The Art of Avaz'' and ''Afghan Music and Dance: Shared Arts of Persia's Past, Highlighting 1970s Herat'', both of which explore the cultural and historical connections between the two regions. William Benjamin Bensussen (born November 7, 1982), better known by his stage name The Gaslamp Killer, is an American alternative hip hop producer and DJ based in Los Angeles, California. Orlando Julius Aremu Olusanya Ekemode, known professionally as Orlando Julius or Orlando Julius Ekemode (22 September 1943 – 14 April 2022) was a Nigerian saxophonist, singer, bandleader, and songwriter closely associated with afrobeat music. Julius began by playing drums or flute with juju and konkoma bands and learned saxophone to play highlife music, eventually playing with musicians Jazz Romero, Rex Williams, and Eddie Okonta. He began experimenting with combining traditional music with horns, guitar, and American genres, a fusion which came to be known as afrobeat. He had his first hits with 1965's "Jagua Nana" and the 1966 album ''Super Afro Soul''. In the 1970s, Julius moved to the United States, forming a band with Hugh Masekela and later working as a session musician before returning to Nigeria in 1984.
