The Great Mystical Circus (film)
''The Great Mystical Circus'' () is a 2018 Brazilian romantic drama film directed and written by Cacá Diegues, his first film in 12 years. It premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the Brazilian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. It is based on a poem by Jorge de Lima and tells the story of a great love affair between an aristocrat and an acrobat and the saga of the Austrian family who owned the Circus Knieps, and their adventures around the world during the early 20th century. Plot The story of five generations of the same circus family, from the grand opening of the Great Mystical Circus in 1910 to the present day. Cacá Diegues
Carlos Diegues (also known as Cacá Diegues; 19 May 1940 – 14 February 2025) was a Brazilian film director, best known as a member of the Cinema Novo movement. He was popularly known for his unconventional, yet intriguing film techniques among other film producers of the Cinema Novo movement. Diegues was also widely known for his dynamic use of visuals, ideas, plots, themes, and other cinematic techniques. He incorporated many musical acts in his film as he favored musical pieces to be complementary to his ideas. Diegues remained very popular and is regarded as having been one of the great cinematic producers of his generation. Diegues would go on to produce films, plays, musicals, and other forms of entertainment in Brazil. Diegues' contributions to Brazilian cinema developed the film industry. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 29th Academy Awards, 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. Antônio José da Silva Fagundes Filho (born 18 April 1949) is a Brazilian actor, playwright, voice actor, and producer. Renowned for his several performances in stage, film and television, where he frequently works in telenovelas. Juliano Cazarré (born 24 September 1980) is a Brazilian actor and writer. He appeared in more than thirty films since 2002. Biography Cazarré is son of the juvenile writer and journalist Lourenço Cazarré, winner of the 1998 Jabuti Award. His family moved to Brasília shortly after his birth. Jorge Mateus de Lima (; April 23, 1893 – November 15, 1953) was a Brazilian politician, physician, poet, novelist, biographer, essayist, translator and painter. His poetry was initially composed in Alexandrine form, but he later became a modernist. Biography He was born in União dos Palmares, the son of a wealthy merchant. When he was nine, he moved with his mother and siblings to Maceió. In 1909, when only sixteen, he moved to Salvador where he began his medical studies. He completed his studies in Rio de Janeiro in 1914, but he decided that he wanted to make his name as a poet. That same year he published his first book of poems, ''Alexandrians XIV''.
