The Gentry
The Gentry is a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 1988. Born in 1985, he is the only classic-winning son of the brilliant galloper McGinty who beat the best on both sides of the Tasman in his racing career and with an ounce of luck should arguably have been the first New Zealand winner of the Golden Slipper. The Gentry showed promise at two, taking out the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes, but then lost his form for the best part of a year and, with the exception of a class 3 win at Tauranga, failed to finish in the first three for nine months. But he bounced back to his best at exactly the right time, winning a three-year-old race at Ellerslie in late November before running second to Lou Morton in the Avondale Guineas and turning the table on that horse with a spectacular performance in the one that really matters, the New Zealand Derby. McGinty (horse)
McGinty, known in Australia as Mr McGinty, was a Group 1 winning New Zealand bred and trained race-horse and sire. Racing career The son of One Pound Sterling was the winner of six Group One races and a total of 14 races. He was trained by Colin Jillings at Takanini for race commentator Keith Haub and co-owner Barney McCahill. He was usually ridden by Robert Vance. McGinty was outstanding as a young horse and had six wins and a second from seven starts as a 2-year old horse and four wins and two places from eight starts as a 3-year old. He was the top-weighted horse on the NZ 1981-82 Two-Year-Old Free Handicap and was top colt on the 1982-83 NZ Three Year Old Free Handicap. His Group One wins came in the Air New Zealand Stakes (twice), Rawson Stakes, Canterbury Guineas, Caulfield Stakes and George Adams Handicap. New Zealand Derby
The New Zealand Derby is a set-weights Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, run over a distance of 2,400 metres (12 furlongs) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. It is held on the first Saturday in March, as the opening day of Auckland Cup Week. The purse of the race in 2020 was $1 million. History The New Zealand Derby is an amalgamation of two races – the New Zealand Derby, run since 1860 at Riccarton, Christchurch; and the Great Northern Derby, run since 1875 at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland. The races were combined in 1973. Riccarton was awarded two 1,600 m races for three-year-olds in place of its Derby – the New Zealand 2000 Guineas and New Zealand 1000 Guineas. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Poetic Prince, known in Australia as Our Poetic Prince, was an Australian bred and New Zealand trained race-horse that was a top performer at Group 1 level. Racing career Poetic Prince was trained by John Wheeler at New Plymouth. Two year old season After a third in his debut race at Ellerslie Racecourse on 18 April 1987 he won his next three races, at Trentham Racecourse and Foxton over 1200m ridden by David Walsh and then Wairarapa (1400m) with Garry Phillips.
