The Fourth Direction
''The Fourth Direction'' (Punjabi: Chauthi Koot) is a 2015 Indian Punjabi-language drama film directed by Gurvinder Singh. It is based on the short stories ''The Fourth Direction'' and ''I Am Feeling Fine Now'' from Indian author Waryam Singh Sandhu's 2005 collection ''Chauthi Koot''. The film is produced by Kartikeya Narayan Singh and is set around the Sikh separatist movement of the 1980s. It is the second part of Singh’s ''Punjab Trilogy'', after ''Alms for a Blind Horse'' (2011), and is followed by ''Crescent Night'' (2022). It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It won the Silver Screen Award at the Singapore International Film Festival for Best Asian Feature Film in December 2015. The film was shot mostly around Amritsar and Ferozepur in Punjab, India. Gurvinder Singh
Gurvinder Singh is an Indian film director. He is best known for his Punjabi language films ''Anhe Ghore Da Daan'', and Chauthi Koot (The Fourth Direction) which premiered at Venice and Cannes Film Festival respectively. Gurvinder is an alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune from where he studied film-making and graduated in 2001. He travelled extensively through Punjab between 2002 and 2006, living and traveling with folk itinerants, documenting folk ballads and oral narratives. It led to his first documentary 'Pala'. He continued to make short experimental works and documenting arts/artists for the next few years. In 2005 he was invited by avant-garde Indian filmmaker Mani Kaul to be his teaching assistant for a master-class at FTII, which led to a close association with the filmmaker who became his mentor. Operation Blue Star was a military operation by the Indian Armed Forces conducted between 1 and 10 June 1984 to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other Sikh militants from the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), a holy site of Sikhism, and its adjacent buildings. A long-standing movement advocating for greater political rights for the Khalsa, Sikh community had previously existed in the Indian state of Punjab, India, Punjab, and in 1973, Sikh activists presented the Indian government with the Anandpur Sahib Resolution, a list of demands for greater autonomy for Punjab. The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) is a public trust that organises the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in the city of Mumbai, India.
