''The Fiftieth Gate'' is a book written by Mark Raphael Baker and published by HarperCollins in 1997. The book documents his exploration of his parents' memories and past in relation to the Holocaust The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe; .... The book won a New South Wales Premier's Literary Award in 1997, and the Ethnic Affairs Commission Community Relations Commission Award in 2001. Themes Baker explores many themes including the interplay between history and memory, the impacts of guilt on the children of Holocaust survivors, the value of individual memory and much more. The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe; around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population. The New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards, also known as the NSW Premier's Literary Awards, were first awarded in 1979. They are among the richest literary awards in Australia.
