The Bangles
The Bangles are an American pop rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1981. The band recorded several singles that reached the U.S. top 10 during the 1980s, including " Manic Monday" (1986), " Walk Like an Egyptian" (1986), "Hazy Shade of Winter" (1987), " In Your Room" (1988), and " Eternal Flame" (1989). Susanna Hoffs
Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959) is an American singer and guitarist, best known as a co-founder of the pop-rock band The Bangles. Hoffs founded The Bangles (originally called the Bangs) in 1981 with Debbi and Vicki Peterson. They released their first full length album '' All Over the Place'' on Columbia Records in 1984. Hoffs started a solo career after The Bangles disbanded in 1989. She released her first solo album, ''When You're a Boy'', in 1991. She later formed the faux British 1960s band Ming Tea with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet. Hoffs has also appeared in a supporting role in several movies. Liam Sternberg
Liam Sternberg (born July 28, 1949 in Akron, Ohio) is an American songwriter and producer who wrote the Bangles hit "Walk Like an Egyptian". Sternberg first got noticed as part of the late 1970s "Akron Sound" which included Devo and the Waitresses. A member of the band Jane Aire and the Belvederes, Sternberg curated an Akron Sound compilation album for Stiff Records which gained the attention of rock critic Robert Christgau and brought national attention to the scene. Following this, he worked for other artists including Kirsty MacColl, Rachel Sweet, Ratt, Fuzzbox, Riff Regan, and Baby Tuckoo. As a songwriter, Sternberg was the composer of the theme for the hit television program ''21 Jump Street''. "Walk Like an Egyptian" is a song recorded by the American band the Bangles. It was released in 1986 as the third single from the album '' Different Light''. It was the band's first number one single, being certified gold by the RIAA, and became ''Billboard'''s number-one song of 1987. Composition Liam Sternberg said he was inspired to create the song while on a ferry crossing the English Channel. When the vessel hit choppy water, passengers stepped carefully and moved their arms awkwardly while struggling to maintain their balance, and that reminded Sternberg of the depiction of human figures in ancient Egyptian tomb paintings. He wrote the words "Walk like an Egyptian" in a notebook. "I'll Set You Free" is a song by The Bangles. It first appeared on their third album ''Everything'' in 1988, and was later released as its fourth single in the United Kingdom and Europe in 1989 as a goodbye-single to the fans. "I'll Set You Free" was released as a single in Australia in 1990 to promote their ''Greatest Hits''. Personnel The song was composed by guitarist and vocalist Susanna Hoffs with Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro, and produced by Davitt Sigerson. The track was remixed by Bernard Edwards for release as a single, with additional engineering by Larry Alexander. The album version of the song runs to 4 minutes 27 seconds, and the single mix lasts 24 seconds longer. As well as a thicker sound than the original recording, the single version has a more forceful introduction and a different lead vocal by Hoffs. "Getting Out of Hand" is the debut single by American female band The Bangles, released in 1981 and produced by the band themselves. The group was named at the time The Bangs, and its line-up consisted of Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson and Vicki Peterson. The group was part of the Paisley Underground movement, a musical scene based around Los Angeles in which groups mixed 1960s-inspired pop with garage rock. "Getting Out of Hand", written by Vicki Peterson and sung by Hoffs, was released as The Bangs' debut single on their own label DownKiddie Records, and distributed locally around Los Angeles in 1981. In order to gain more exposure, Hoffs personally handed a copy of the single to radio DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, pleading for the song to be aired on his radio show ''Rodney on the ROQ''. In December 1981, Bingenheimer started playing the single, resulting in an increase of the audience on the band's live shows. ''Everything'' is the third studio album by American pop rock band the Bangles. It was released on October 18, 1988 through Columbia Records. Just like its predecessor, ''Everything'' produced a US Top 5 hit (" In Your Room"), and a number one single, "Eternal Flame," which became a chart-topper in almost every major country around the world. The 2008 reissue CD on the Wounded Birds label (WOU 4056) adds a bonus track: "In Your Room" (12" Remix). Two songs that were recorded for the album but not included were "What I Meant to Say", written by the Peterson sisters and sung by Debbi, which was released as the B-side of "Eternal Flame", as well as "Everything I Wanted", co-written and sung by Susanna Hoffs and released in 1990 on ''Greatest Hits''. Thomas F. Kelly (born April 16, 1952) is an American musician, best known for his songwriting partnership with Billy Steinberg. Steinberg and Kelly co-wrote numerous hit songs for popular music artists, including five number-one singles on the ''Billboard'' Top 100 chart in the 1980s. Early life Originally from Indiana, Kelly lived in Effingham, Illinois from 1963 to 1966, before moving back to West Lafayette, Indiana where he graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1967. Kelly attended Eastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Purdue University, but dropped out of college to pursue his music career. William Endfield Steinberg (born February 26, 1950) is an American songwriter. He achieved his greatest success in the 1980s with songwriting partner Tom Kelly; together they wrote or co-wrote the No. 1 hits " Like a Virgin" by Madonna (1984), " True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper (1986), "Eternal Flame" by the Bangles (1989), " So Emotional" by Whitney Houston (1987) and "Alone" (covered by Heart in 1987).
