Barrack Street
Barrack Street is one of two major cross-streets in the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. Together with St Georges Terrace, Wellington Street and William Street it defines the boundary of the main shopping precinct of the central city. Route description Barrack Street commences at Barrack Street Jetty, and the adjacent Barrack Square. Moving in an uphill direction away from the Swan River, it passes alongside the Supreme Court Gardens and the Stirling Gardens. Crossing St Georges Terrace, Barrack Street then passes alongside the heritage-listed Treasury Buildings and the Perth Town Hall. William Street is a suburban distributor and one of two major cross-streets in the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. Commencing in western Mount Lawley, its route takes it through the Northbridge café and nightclub district as well as the CBD. It is a subsidiary of WesCEF, which in turn is part of the industrials division of the Wesfarmers conglomerate. Esplanade Hotel, Perth
The Esplanade Hotel was a hotel on The Esplanade (Perth), The Esplanade across from Esplanade Reserve in Perth, Western Australia. Its demolition in 1972 was controversial because of the building's beauty and popularity. Its early history appears in James Sykes Battye's 1912 Cyclopedia of Western Australia. Various proprietors owned the property over time, including N. W. Harper, who sold it in 1927 to J. Atlas Building, Perth
The Atlas Building is a heritage-listed building in Perth, Western Australia. It is located in the Perth central business district at 8–10 The Esplanade, and sits along the south-western side of Sherwood Court. The construction of the building in the 1930s was well documented. The building was constructed for the Atlas Assurance Company, in an Inter-War Free Classical style, with an art-deco entrance and lift. It has historical significance both architecturally and as one of few commercial developments in Perth constructed during the depression years. Sherwood Court, Perth
Sherwood Court is a short sloping road between St Georges Terrace in Perth, Western Australia and The Esplanade with Allendale Square on the upper corner, and Lawson Apartments on the lower. It sits across from London Court and allows pedestrian access between the central business district and The Esplanade and Perth foreshore. Its context has been taken into consideration in planning of the Perth foreshore development in that it is claimed that planned structures on The Esplanade will not block the view to Perth Water. Lawson Apartments
Lawson Apartments are located at 2–4 Sherwood Court near the corner with The Esplanade, in Perth, Western Australia. They are situated across the road from the Elizabeth Quay precinct (formerly the Esplanade Reserve) and adjacent to the Weld Club. History The building, originally known as Lawson Flats, is an eleven-storey art deco apartment block, constructed in 1937, by the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society. It included a restaurant and a private club, the Perth Club, at the lower three floors and apartments above. The building was designed by Sydney architects Hennessy, Hennessy & Co in association with local architect, Reginald Summerhayes for rental purposes as a companion piece to the neighbouring Colonial Mutual Life building (1936–1980) on St Georges Terrace. Weld Club
The Weld Club is a private male-only social club in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1871 as a gentlemen's club, it is named after Frederick Weld, the chronologically first patron of the club and the Governor of Western Australia at the time. Building , the club occupies a building designed by Talbot Hobbs and constructed in 1892 by the Bunning Brothers, the founders of Bunnings, for the organisation. It is situated at the corner of The Esplanade and Barrack Street, immediately across the street from Stirling Gardens.
