''The English Game'' is a British historical sports drama television miniseries developed by Julian Fellowes for Netflix about the origins of modern association football in England. The six-part series was released on 20 March 2020. Premise In the 1870s, football in the United Kingdom was a sport for the wealthy. Historical Drama
A historical drama (also period drama, costume drama, and period piece) is a work set in a past time period, usually used in the context of film and television. Historical drama includes historical fiction and romance film, romances, adventure films, and swashbucklers. A period piece may be set in a vague or general era such as the Middle Ages, or a specific period such as the Roaring Twenties, or the recent past. Scholarship Films set in historical times have always been some of the most popular works. D. W. Griffith's ''The Birth of a Nation'' and Buster Keaton's ''The General (1926 film), The General'' are examples of popular early American works set during the U.S. Civil War. James Love (Scottish Footballer)
James Love (17 March 1858 – 27 September 1882) was a Scottish footballer who is acknowledged as one of the first professional football players in England, having played for Darwen in the late 1870s. He was a native of Glasgow and played for Partick before moving to England to play for Darwen. He died in 1882 whilst serving for the British military in Egypt. Early life Love was born in Gushetfaulds Cottage in Glasgow in 1858. He set himself up as a street-cleaning contractor in Partick but got into financial difficulties and in October 1878, his two horses and his equipment, including a street-sweeping machine, were sold off at a public warrant sale. Shortly afterwards he was summoned to the Glasgow bankruptcy court but he failed to show up and the court postponed the case for a month. On 21 November 1878, he again failed to appear and the local Sheriff issued a warrant for his arrest. It was never served as he had left Scotland and moved to Darwen. Football Whilst working, ... Monkey Hornby
Albert Neilson Hornby, nicknamed Monkey Hornby (10 February 1847 – 17 December 1925) was one of the best-known sportsmen in England during the nineteenth century excelling in both rugby and cricket. He was the first of only two men to captain the country at both rugby and cricket but is also remembered as the England cricket captain whose side lost the Test match which gave rise to the Ashes, at home against the Australians in 1882. Alfred Lyttelton
Alfred Lyttelton KC (7 February 1857 – 5 July 1913) was a British politician and sportsman from the Lyttelton family who excelled at both football and cricket.
