The Disciple (2020 Film)
''The Disciple'' is a 2020 Indian Marathi-language drama film written, directed and edited by Chaitanya Tamhane. It stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, Deepika Bhide Bhagwat, and Kiran Yadnyopavit. Alfonso Cuarón serves as an executive producer. It was entered into the main competition section at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, becoming the first Indian film since '' Monsoon Wedding'' (2001) to compete at the festival. At Venice, the film won FIPRESCI International Critics Prize presented by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI, short for Federation Internationale de la Presse Cinematographique) and the Best Screenplay award. Chaitanya Tamhane
Chaitanya Tamhane (born 1 March 1987) is an Indian filmmaker, known for the 2014 Marathi courtroom drama ''Court''. It was announced as India's official submission for the 88th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film examines the Indian legal system through the trial of an aging folk singer in a lower court in Mumbai. ''Court'' is Tamhane's directorial debut for a feature length film. His previous work includes the short film ''Six Strands'', of which he was also the writer and director, as well as producer. For ''Court'', Tamhane was nominated for best screenwriter at the 9th Asian Film Awards and won best director at the 16th Mumbai Film Festival, among many other awards and honors. The Amplify Voices Award is an annual film award presented by the Toronto International Film Festival. First presented at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, the award was originally presented to three films annually, with one award open to all Canadian feature films and designated as the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Film, and two awards presented to films from anywhere in the world directed by filmmakers who are Black, Indigenous or People of Colour.
