The Devil (1915 Film)
''The Devil'' is a 1915 silent film version of the Ferenc Molnár play, adapted by Thomas Ince. It was directed by Ince and Reginald Barker and stars Bessie Barriscale and Edward Connelly. The film was re-edited and re-released on the State's Rights market in 1918-1919 as part of a Bessie Barriscale series. Plot The Devil, in the guise of a human, meets a young couple who remark upon looking at a Renaissance painting of a martyr that Evil could never triumph over Good. The Devil, taking this as a challenge, decides to bring about the couple's downfall. Reginald Barker
Reginald C. Barker (April 2, 1886 – February 23, 1945) was a pioneer film director. Biography Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Barker's family moved to Scotland when he was an infant and then to the United States. Living in California, Barker wrote, produced, and acted in his first play known as ''Granna Uile'' at the age of sixteen following which he acted and handled stage manager duties with a traveling stock company (acting), stock company. When he was eighteen he was the leading man and played in many stock companies. Then he worked with Robert C. Hilliard (actor), Robert Hilliard in the production of the play named ''A Fool There Was''. At age nineteen, he went to New York City where he worked as a stage manager for Henry Miller (actor), Henry Miller. Rhea Ginger Mitchell (December 10, 1890 – September 16, 1957) was an American film actress and screenwriter who appeared in over 100 films, mainly during the silent era. A native of Portland, Oregon, Mitchell began her acting career in local theater, and joined the Baker Stock Company after completing high school. She appeared in various regional theater productions on the West Coast between 1911 and 1913. In 1912, Mitchell signed with the New York Motion Picture Corporation, making her film debut in ''The Colonel's Ward'', directed by Edward LeSaint. Clara Williams
Clara Williams (May 3, 1888 – May 8, 1928) was an American silent film actress. Along with Louise Glaum and Dorothy Dalton, she was one of the principal leading ladies at Inceville, one of the first motion picture studios to make feature films in Los Angeles. Williams appeared in more than one hundred films between 1910 and 1918, including starring roles in '' The Italian'' and William S. Hart's western, ''Hell's Hinges'', both of which are included in the National Film Registry. When she married director Reginald Barker at age 31, she retired from acting.
