The Demonstration Archive
''The Demonstration Archive 1996 - 1998'' is a compilation album by Agalloch featuring music from the band's unsigned years from 1996 to 1998. Tracks 1 through 3 were taken from Agalloch's first demo from 1997, ''From Which of This Oak''; tracks 4 through 6 were from an unreleased 7" vinyl EP recorded in autumn 1998 called ''Of Stone, Wind and Pillor'' (later released as a limited-edition CD with bonus tracks by The End Records); and tracks 7 and 8 came from Agalloch's second demo ''Promo 1998''. All of the material was taken from the original DAT tapes and analog reels. Aside from some slight mastering to keep the songs at an even volume, nothing was edited or polished. The collection included a 12-page booklet with notes, contemporary artwork, and 1998 photos. The recordings of "Hallways of Enchanted Ebony" and "The Melancholy Spirit" are not the same versions that appeared on the studio album ''Pale Folklore''. Agalloch
Agalloch () was an American extreme metal band from Portland, Oregon. Formed in 1995 by frontman John Haughm, they released five full-length albums, four EPs, two singles, one split single, two demos, four compilation albums and one live video album. They announced their disbandment in May 2016. History Formation and early years (1995–1997) Named after the resinous wood of the agarwood (Aquilaria agallocha), Agalloch began as the creation of Haughm and keyboardist Shane Breyer. In early 1996, the duo began composing material. Guitarist Don Anderson joined the band that summer to further refine the songs, which were recorded that autumn for release as the band's first demo tape, From Which of This Oak. This recording displayed a significant black metal influence and included material which would later appear on subsequent albums in one form or another. Folk Metal
Folk metal is a fusion genre of heavy metal music and traditional folk music that developed in Europe during the 1990s. It is characterised by the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles (for example, Dutch Heidevolk, Danish Sylvatica and Spanish Stone of Erech). It also sometimes features soft instrumentation influenced by folk rock. The earliest folk metal bands were Skyclad from England and Cruachan from Ireland. Black Metal
Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Common traits include fast tempos, a shrieking vocal style, heavily distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, raw ( lo-fi) recording, unconventional song structures, and an emphasis on atmosphere. Artists often appear in corpse paint and adopt pseudonyms. During the 1980s, several thrash metal and death metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other heavy metal genres.K. The White (Agalloch EP)
''The White'' is an EP by American metal band Agalloch, released on February 29, 2008. A follow-up to Agalloch's 2004 EP '' The Grey'', it completed a dichotomy of releases for Vendlus Records. ''The White'' contained seven neofolk and dark ambient tracks written and recorded between 2004 and 2007. The release was limited to 2000 copies. The song "Sowilo Rune" (referencing the Sowilo rune) was posted on the band's official Myspace page on January 4. The songs "The Isle of Summer," "Summerisle Reprise," and "Sowilo Rune" contained samples from the 1973 film ''The Wicker Man''. The Silence Of Forgotten Landscapes
The Silence of Forgotten Landscapes is a 2009 live DVD by American metal band Agalloch. It features a 2008 performance by the band at the Biebob venue in Vosselaar, Belgium. It was co-directed by Juan Mosqueda and Agalloch frontman John Haughm. Production Haughm's illness The idea to film a performance for a DVD release was sprung on the band very suddenly during their 2008 European tour. Haughm was ill with pneumonia during the tour, and on the evening of the Belgian performance he was feeling particularly unwell. He described his state as like "a bad hangover complete with hallucinations" and that he was singing "with a throat that felt like it was on fire." The band contemplated canceling the performance but Haughm decided instead to "take it like a man and do it," and during the performance he hid his coughing behind his hair. Of Stone, Wind And Pillor
''Of Stone, Wind, and Pillor'' is an EP by American metal band Agalloch. It was originally meant to be released on 7" vinyl in December 1998 by Iron Fist Productions (with only the first three songs), but that did not occur. It was later released in 2001 via The End Records with two additional tracks: "Kneel to the Cross", recorded in 2001, and "A Poem by Yeats", recorded in 2000. This release was limited to 2,500 copies. The cover artwork, ''Le Cerf Se Voyant Dans L'Eau'', was by Gustave Doré. Lyrics in the song "A Poem by Yeats" have been taken from W. B. Yeats's poem "The Sorrow of Love". "Kneel to the Cross" is a Sol Invictus cover. ''Pale Folklore'' is the debut studio album by American metal band Agalloch. The album was released on June 6, 1999 by The End Records. It featured an eclectic mix of acoustic folk reminiscent of Scandinavian bands such as Ulver; doom and black metal-esque riffs; growled, clean, whispered, and shrieked vocals; and a production style and atmosphere that borrowed heavily from black metal. The lyrical themes focused mainly on depression, nature, folklore and the supernatural. John Haughm
John Haughm (born September 14, 1975) is a musician and artist from the United States. He is most known for being the founder, guitarist, and vocalist of the band Agalloch, and later Pillorian. He is also a designer who has created packaging and merchandise for several record labels and bands, including every project in which he has performed. From 2008 to 2018 he was the co-owner, creative director, and curator of the Dämmerung Arthouse.
