The Democrats (Israel)
The Democrats ( he, הדמוקרטים) is a progressive political party in Israel, formed by the merger of the Israeli Labor Party and Meretz in July 2024. It is led by Yair Golan, who was the Labor Party leader prior to the merger and previously served as an MK for the Democratic Union before joining Meretz. History Background In the 2022 Israeli legislative election, the left-wing Meretz party won 3.16% of the vote failing, for the first time, to pass the electoral threshold (3.25%) required to qualify for seats in the Knesset, while the Labor Party just managed to pass, with 3.6% of the vote, winning only four seats, its worst ever performance in terms of popular vote. Ehud Barak
Ehud Barak ( he-a, אֵהוּד בָּרָק, Ehud_barak.ogg, link=yes, born Ehud Brog; 12 February 1942) is an Israeli general and politician who served as the tenth prime minister from 1999 to 2001. He was leader of the Labor Party until January 2011. He previously held the posts of defense minister and deputy prime minister under Ehud Olmert and then in Benjamin Netanyahu's second government from 2007 to 2013. He attempted a political comeback, running in the September 2019 Israeli legislative election as the leader of a new party that he formed. Merav Michaeli
Merav Michaeli ( he, מֵרַב מִיכָאֵלִי, translit=Mērav Mīxāʾēlī; born 24 November 1966) is an Israeli politician, journalist, TV anchor, radio broadcaster, feminist, and activist. She is currently the leader of the Israeli Labor Party and the Minister of Transport and Road Safety in the thirty-sixth government of Israel. Biography Michaeli was born in Petah Tikva to Ami Michaeli and Suzan Kastner, of Hungarian Jewish background. She is the granddaughter of Rudolf Kastner and also of Nehemia Michaeli who was the last secretary of the Mapam party. During her youth, Michaeli served as leader in the Israeli Scouts. The 2024 Israeli Labor Party leadership election is scheduled to be held in April 2024 to elect a successor to Merav Michaeli as leader of the Israeli Labor Party. Background Michaeli was first elected leader of the Israeli Labor Party in the party's 2021 leadership election. Prior to her election as the party's leader, opinion polling for the 2021 Knesset election had the party falling below the electoral threshold. Legislative elections are expected to be held in Israel by 27 October 2026 to elect the members of the twenty-sixth Knesset. Background After the 36th government lost its majority, the 2022 snap election was called. Naama Lazimi (, born 11 January 1986) is a politician and Member of the Knesset for the Labor Party. Previously, she was a member of the Haifa City Council and vice chairman of the Student Association at the University of Haifa. She is also involved in LGBT rights activism. Gilad Kariv ( he, גִּלְעָד קָרִיב, born 30 November 1973) is an Israeli Reform rabbi, attorney and politician.
