The work was completed in 1982 and measures 19 in by 22 in. Currently, the painting is in the collection of the Museum of the City of New York after being donated in 1994 as part of the Martin Wong Graffiti Collection. ''The Death of Graffiti'' has also been displayed in the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields' 2017 exhibition entitled "City as Canvas: New York City Graffiti From the 70s & 80s". Lady Pink created another version of ''The Death of Graffiti'' in 2018, titled ''Death of Graffiti 3.'' This version differs from the original in size, 72 in by 72 in, and visual elements such as the style of graffiti tags. Lady Pink, born Sandra Fabara (born 1964), is an Ecuadorian-born American graffiti and mural artist, active in New York City. Early life Fabara was born in Ambato, Ecuador in 1964, and moved to the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, New York when she was seven years old. She grew up wanting to be an architect like her father. She started her graffiti writing career in 1979 following the loss of a boyfriend. She exercised her grief by tagging her boyfriend's name across New York City. Lady Pink studied at the Manhattan High School of Art and Design, where she was introduced to graffiti. During her senior year of school, she began to start exhibiting her work while balancing her personal life. Name origin Lady Pink was first given her name “Pink” by Seen TC5. Martin Wong
Martin Wong (; July 11, 1946 – August 12, 1999) was a Chinese-American painter of the late 20th century. His work has been described as a meticulous blend of social realism and visionary art styles. Wong's paintings often explored multiple ethnic and racial identities, exhibited cross-cultural elements, demonstrated multilingualism, and celebrated his queer sexuality. He exhibited for two decades at notable New York galleries including EXIT ART, Semaphore, and P.P.O.W., among others, before his death in San Francisco from an AIDS-related illness. Beyond The Streets
Beyond the Streets is a graffiti and street art exhibition and gallery created and curated by Roger Gastman. The first exhibition was held in 2018 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, USA and has since occurred yearly. In 2022, a permanent gallery and store was opened at the location of the original exhibition in LA. Photojournalist Martha Cooper has had her work featured at, and is the official photographer of, the exhibition. Exhibitions The concept of Beyond the Streets evolved from Gastman's earlier exhibition Art in the Streets, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles in 2011. Beyond the Streets (2018) The first Beyond the Streets was in LA from 6 May to 6 July 2018, and featured work by pioneering graffiti writers Cornbread (graffiti artist), Cornbread, TAKI 183, and Lady Pink, well-known artist Banksy. Tags are one of the primary forms of modern graffiti, along with Throw up (graffiti), throw ups and Piece (graffiti), pieces. The act of writing a tag is known as tagging. Tags are often thought of as the simplest form of graffiti art, prioritising legibility and flow, and are the form that most artists start with. Tags, perhaps due to their simplicity, are more likely to be considered vandalism than other more elaborate graffiti styles. Tags are an artist signature and vary through uniqueness and methods. Form Often produced using spray paint or Permanent marker, markers, tags are established from throw-up and pieces. Seen (artist)
Richard Mirando, known as Seen, is an American graffiti artist. He is one of the best known graffiti artists in the world and has been referred to as the Godfather of Graffiti. Seen first started to paint on the New York City Subway system in 1973. He was born in the Bronx, New York City. Life For the next 16 years he painted pieces across the city and on all subway routes, but they were especially prominent on the 2, 5, and 6 trains. He was responsible for dozens of whole-car top-to-bottoms, many of which have become iconic images of the time. During the very early 1980s he started producing work on canvas, shown by galleries and bought by museums and private collectors. 5 Pointz: The Institute of Higher Burnin' or 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc., mainly referred to as simply 5 Pointz or 5Pointz, was an American mural space at 4546 Davis Street in Long Island City, Queens, New York City. When the building opened in 1892, it housed the Neptune Meter factory, which built water meters. Jerry Wolkoff, a developer, bought the property in the early 1970s. He originally planned to develop the building, but instead leased the space to companies. Wolkoff started leasing the space as artists' studios in the 1990s. The building's exterior was covered with street art, and the building became renowned worldwide for the art on its wall. Originally known as Fun Factory, the building was renamed "5 Pointz" in 2002 after Wolkoff hired the graffiti artist Jonathan Cohen to curate the exterior murals.
