The Conqueror (1956 Film)
''The Conqueror'' is a 1956 American epic historical drama film, directed by Dick Powell and written by Oscar Millard. It stars John Wayne as the Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan and co-stars Susan Hayward, Agnes Moorehead and Pedro Armendáriz. Produced by entrepreneur Howard Hughes, the film was principally shot near St. George, Utah. Despite the stature of the cast and a respectable box office performance, the film was critically panned; it is often ranked as one of the worst films of the 1950s and also as one of the worst films ever made. Wayne, who was at the height of his career, had lobbied for the lead role after reading the script and was widely believed to have been grossly miscast. ''The Conqueror'' was listed in the 1978 book '' The Fifty Worst Films of All Time''. Dick Powell
Richard Ewing Powell (November 14, 1904 – January 2, 1963) was an American actor, singer, musician, producer, director, and studio head. Though he came to stardom as a musical comedy performer, he showed versatility and successfully transformed into a hardboiled leading man, starring in projects of a more dramatic nature. He was the first actor to portray private detective Philip Marlowe on screen. Early life Powell was born the middle of three sons of Ewing Powell and mother Sally Rowena in Mountain View, Arkansas. He married Mildred Maund, a model, but she found being married to an entertainer not to her liking. Peter Mamakos
Peter Mamakos (December 14, 1918 – April 27, 2008) was an American film and television actor. Early life Mamakos was of Greek descent. Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, he attended Somerville High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, The Players Club (drama society), and the Boys Glee Club. Mamakos' father owned Pilgrim restaurants in New England. Mamakos was sent to California to scout locations for restaurants, but he liked Hollywood so much that he decided to stay, declining his father's offers of $50,000 in cash and a $250,000 nightclub of his own if he returned to Boston. He told a reporter, "I feel right at home in Hollywood. A hot kitchen and a hot sound stage are alike – you're surrounded by hams in both." Clarence LeRoy Van Cleef Jr. (January 9, 1925 – December 16, 1989) was an American actor.
