"The Cheerful Cuckold" is a 1969 Australian TV play. It was written by and stars Alan Hopgood. Plot It was about a young university lecturer (Hopgood) who is cuckolded by his wife Sybil (Sue Donovan). He devises a method to deal with it. Reception One critic called it "the most painful Australian production I have seen since television started." The script won the Awgie Award. Oscar Whitbread
Oscar Ralph Whitbread (26 November 1929 – 16 May 2016) was an English-Australian producer who worked extensively in television. He moved to Australia in the late 1940s. Whitbread started his career at the ABC in 1956, where he served as the Head of Drama, before switching to the same position with the Seven Network. He was responsible for numerous successful series including '' Bellbird'', ''The Flying Doctors'' and the miniseries '' Power Without Glory''. Whitbread was the senior executive producer at Crawford Productions and also worked in England for the BBC, Thames Television, Granada Television and London Weekend Television. During the 1970s, he worked as a lecturer in theatre media studies, at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, New South Wales. Personal life Whitbread was married to Corinne Kerby. Alan Hopgood
Alan John Hopgood AM (29 September 1934 – 19 March 2022), also known as Alan Hopwood, was an Australian actor, producer, and writer. He wrote the screenplay for the 1972 film ''Alvin Purple'' and made appearances in television shows such as '' Bellbird'', ''Prisoner'' and '' Neighbours''. Early life Hopgood was born in Launceston, Tasmania, and grew up in the state. He acted in several dramatic roles in his childhood. He attended school in Melbourne and then studied at the University of Melbourne, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Hon) and a Diploma of Education. His first play, ''Marcus'', was produced at Melbourne University while he was working as a school teacher. He left teaching to write full-time and start his acting career. Sue McIntosh (née Menlove; born 1946) is an Australian television actress, presenter and journalist. Career During the 1960s and 1970s, McIntosh was an actress who worked in British and Australian television. Robin Ramsay is an Australian former television, film and stage actor. He appeared in the rural series '' Bellbird'' as Charlie Cousins, in which he was best known for the scene where he falls from a wheat silo and dies. Early life and education Ramsay is the grandson of William Ramsay, the founder and manufacturer of the shoe polish firm Kiwi, Ramsay is the disowned son of Thomas Meek Ramsay and Alice née James (1909-2009). His parents divorced, and his mother later married her long-time paramour, the architect Roy Grounds. Ramsay studied at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1957. He worked briefly for the BBC then returned to Australia.
