''The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness'' is a 2007 memoir by USC Gould School of Law professor Elyn Saks. Originally published by Hyperion Books (publisher), Hyperion Books, the book recounts Saks's experiences with schizophrenia, beginning in childhood and continuing through her academic and professional career. While attending Oxford University on a Marshall Scholarship, Saks was admitted to Warneford Hospital, where she burnt herself and wandered underground tunnels. After graduating from Oxford in 1981, she attended Yale Law School and was hospitalized at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) after a psychosis, psychotic break, where she was later medical restraint, restrained on and off for three weeks. Saks accepted a position at USC following her graduation from Yale, married, and summarized that "[w]hile medication had kept me alive, it had been psychoanalysis that had helped me find a life worth living". Elyn Saks
Elyn R. Saks is associate dean and Orrin B. Evans Professor of Law, Psychology, and Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California Gould Law School, an expert in mental health law, and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship winner. Saks lives with schizophrenia and has written about her experience with the illness in her award-winning best-selling autobiography, ''The Center Cannot Hold'', published by Hyperion Books in 2007. She is also a cancer survivor. Academic background Saks was an instructor at the University of Bridgeport School of Law before joining the USC Law faculty in 1989. She graduated ''summa cum laude'' from Vanderbilt University, later earning her master of letters from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar and her J.D. from Yale Law School, where she also edited the ''Yale Law Journal''.
