Cascade Range
The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington (state), Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as many of those in the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades. The small part of the range in British Columbia is referred to as the Canadian Cascades or, locally, as the Cascade Mountains. The highest peak in the range is Mount Rainier in Washington at . part of the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, the ring of volcanoes and associated mountains around the Pacific Ocean. Seattle Cascades Drum And Bugle Corps
The Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive drum and bugle corps. Based in Seattle, Washington, the Cascades is a member corps of Drum Corps International. History The all-male Greenwood Boys Club Drum and Bugle Corps was founded in 1957 by Jack Avery in Seattle’s Green Lake area. In 1958, Roderick Stubbs became the director of the corps and changed the name to the Seattle Thunderbirds. With no other drum corps in their region, the corps existed as a parade and stand-still exhibition unit. The corps raised money to support its operations by holding bingo games at the Green Lake VFW, which became one of the corps’ sponsors. After witnessing the 1963 VFW Junior National Championship in Seattle, the Thunderbirds' leadership decided to put the corps on the competition field. 1964 was a groundbreaking year for the Seattle Thunderbirds. Cascades, Isle Of Dogs
Cascades Tower is a 20-storey residential building and a distinctive local landmark on the Isle of Dogs in East London. It was designed by Rex Wilkinson, a partner in the architectural firm CZWG, and built in 1987–88. The building has a concrete frame with details inspired by riverside industry and nautical themes. The Los Angeles Aqueduct system, comprising the Los Angeles Aqueduct (Owens Valley aqueduct) and the Second Los Angeles Aqueduct, is a water conveyance system, built and operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Waterfall
A waterfall is any point in a river or stream where water flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops. Waterfalls also occur where meltwater drops over the edge of a tabular iceberg or ice shelf. Waterfalls can be formed in several ways, but the most common method of formation is that a river courses over a top layer of resistant bedrock before falling onto softer rock, which erodes faster, leading to an increasingly high fall. Cascades Railroad
The Cascades Railroad ran for about on the north bank of the Columbia River around the Cascades Rapids. The owner was the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. The railroad operated as a portage around the rapids. History Francis A. Chenoweth built a wooden tramway using mules on the north bank of the river in 1851. He sold the tram way to Daniel and Putnam Bradford who incorporated it as the Cascades Railroad. The Great Flood of 1862 (which began in November 1861) swept away the tramway. It was rebuilt as railroad by the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and returned to operation with two steam locomotives named "ANN" and "BETSY" on April 20, 1863. The railroad was broad gauge from 1860 to 1880, standard gauge from 1880 to 1883, and narrow gauge from 1883 until the close of operations. Cascades MAX Station
Cascades is a light rail train station in the MAX Light Rail system. It is served by the Red Line and is located in Portland, Oregon; it is the third stop north on the Airport MAX section. When the line first opened, trains paused here in order to simulate a station stop for timetable purposes, but the stop was not announced nor were the doors opened. In January 2007, the stop officially opened to serve customers of Cascade Station. The Amtrak ''Cascades'' is a passenger train route in the Pacific Northwest, operated by Amtrak in partnership with the U.S. states of Washington (state), Washington and Oregon. Scott Joplin
Scott Joplin (November 24, 1868 – April 1, 1917) was an American composer and pianist. Dubbed the "King of Ragtime", he composed more than 40 ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first and most popular pieces, the "Maple Leaf Rag", became the genre's first and most influential hit, later being recognized as the quintessential rag. Joplin considered ragtime to be a form of classical music meant to be played in concert halls and largely disdained the performance of ragtime as honky tonk music most common in saloons. Joplin grew up in a musical family of railway laborers in Texarkana, Texas. During the late 1880s, he traveled the American South as a musician.
