The Buzzcocks
Buzzcocks are an English punk rock band that singer-songwriter-guitarist Pete Shelley and singer-songwriter Howard Devoto formed in Manchester in 1976. During their career, the band combined elements of punk rock, power pop, and pop punk. They achieved commercial success with singles that fuse pop craftsmanship with rapid-fire punk energy; these singles were later collected on ''Singles Going Steady'', an acclaimed compilation album music journalist and critic Ned Raggett described as a "punk masterpiece". Devoto left the band in 1977 and formed Magazine, after which Pete Shelley became the principal singer-songwriter. The classic lineup of Shelley, Steve Diggle (guitar), Steve Garvey (bass) and John Maher (drums) recorded Buzzcocks' first three albums, after which the band broke up in 1981 following a dispute with their record label. Steve Diggle
Stephen E Diggle (born 7 May 1955) is an English musician best known as a guitarist and later lead vocalist in the punk rock, punk band Buzzcocks. In 1976, Diggle was recruited as a bassist for Buzzcocks, playing bass on the ''Spiral Scratch'' EP (1977). Following the departure of original lead vocalist Howard Devoto soon after, Diggle switched to guitar while Pete Shelley became lead vocalist. He became a member of the band's classic lineup, playing on Buzzcocks' first three albums as well as their acclaimed compilation ''Singles Going Steady'' (1979). Following the group's breakup in 1981, Diggle formed a new band, Flag of Convenience (band), Flag of Convenience in 1982 before disbanding it in 1989 when Buzzcocks re-formed. Following Shelley's death in 2018, Diggle has become the band's new lead vocalist. Garth Smith
Garth Smith (born Garth Davies, 10 December 1955), sometimes credited as Garth, is an English musician, known as the original bassist of the Bolton-formed punk rock band Buzzcocks. Smith played with Buzzcocks during their first concert in April 1976, and re-joined in March 1977 after the departure of original lead vocalist Howard Devoto. Smith played on the " Orgasm Addict" single before being fired in October 1977. He has since played in some other bands. Howard Trafford
Howard Devoto (born Howard Andrew Trafford, 15 March 1952) is an English singer and songwriter, who began his career as the frontman for punk rock band Buzzcocks, but then left to form Magazine, an early post-punk band. After Magazine, he went solo and later formed indie band Luxuria. His singing has been characterized as a "speak-sing voice that veered between amused croon and panicked yelp". Biography Born in Scunthorpe, Devoto grew up in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and Moortown, Leeds, where he attended Leeds Grammar School and met and befriended future Buzzcocks manager Richard Boon. In 1972, he went to Bolton Institute of Technology (now the University of Bolton) to study psychology, and, later, humanities. ''Sonics in the Soul'' is the tenth studio album by English punk rock band Buzzcocks, released on 23 September 2022 by Cherry Red Records. It is their first studio album since 2014's '' The Way'' and their first album without founding member Pete Shelley, who died in 2018. Background After the death of founding member Pete Shelley in December 2018, Buzzcocks released the single "Gotta Get Better" in February 2020 with guitarist Steve Diggle taking on sole songwriting and lead vocalist duties. The ''Senses Out of Control'' EP, featuring the tracks "Senses Out of Control", "Carnival of Illusion" and "Hope Heaven Loves You", was released in April 2022, with only the title track making ''Sonics in the Soul''. ''Singles Going Steady'' is a compilation album by English punk rock band Buzzcocks, released on I.R.S. Records in the United States on 25 September 1979. Background ''Singles Going Steady'' was the first Buzzcocks album to be released in North America and intended as an introduction to the band for the American public, coinciding with a tour of the US. Side one of the original release of the album featured their eight UK single releases on United Artists Records from 1977 up to the time of ''Singles Going Steady'''s release in 1979 in chronological order, while side two featured their corresponding B-sides, also in chronological order. After healthy sales on import in the UK over the next two years, and following the group's split in early 1981, the album was belatedly released in the band's home country on United Artists Records on 16 November 1981 as a 'greatest hits' album. Spinner was an online music and entertainment service. An AOL Music property, it was acquired by AOL on June 1, 1999, along with Nullsoft for $400 million. Based in San Francisco, California, the website was the first Internet music service and was the largest by 2001, while offering promotional features from high-profile recording artists. In 2002, AOL combined Spinner with the former's Netscape portal to form Netscape Radio. Spinner broadcast over 100 radio stations, including Radio CMJ. Punk rock (also known as simply punk) is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. Mike Joyce (musician)
Michael Adrian Paul Joyce (born 1 June 1963) is an English drummer. He is best known for being the drummer for the Smiths from October 1982 to 1987. Career While the Smiths provided Joyce with his first taste of success, he had previously drummed for Manchester band the Hoax and Northern Irish punk rock group Victim. Immediately after the break-up of the band in 1987, Joyce and Smiths bassist Andy Rourke played with Sinéad O'Connor. They, along with Craig Gannon, also provided the rhythm section for two singles by Smiths' singer Morrissey – " Interesting Drug" and " The Last of the Famous International Playboys" and their B-sides.
