The Broadway Hoofer
''The Broadway Hoofer'' is a 1929 all-talking musical film directed by George Archainbaud. The film stars Louise Fazenda, and Marie Saxon. Plot As noted in a film journal, a young woman goes to the country for a rest. There she meets the hero, press-agent and leading man of “The Gay Girlies Burlesque” company. He had been advertising for extras, and when the heroine is shoved into the theatre by a curious crowd he yells at her and beckons her to go to him. He “engages" her. As she enjoys her new e.xperience, the heroine does not disclose her identity but pretends that she is an extra and rehearses. The hero likes her dancing and hires her. In the meantime her manager searches high and low to find her. Her whereabouts eventually become known and her manager visits her and tries to induce her to go back. George Archainbaud
George Archainbaud (May 7, 1890 – February 20, 1959) was a French- American film and television director. Biography In the beginning of his career he worked on stage as an actor and manager. He came to the United States in January 1914, and started his film career as an assistant director to Emile Chautard at the World Film Company in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 1917 he made his own directorial debut '' As Man Made Her''. During the next three and a half decades he directed over one hundred films. After the beginning of the 1950s he moved to television. While working at RKO Radio Pictures in the beginning of the 1930s, he showed some artistic and skillful eye with many of his films. Ernest Hilliard
Ernest Hilliard (January 31, 1890 – September 3, 1947) was an American actor. He appeared in more than 90 films between 1921 and 1947. He was born in New York City and died in Santa Monica, California, from a heart attack. In March 1925 Hilliard spent three days in a Cuban jail after he was arrested for kissing a Cuban woman in an automobile during a carnival parade. He jumped onto the running board of one of the parade's cars, in which rode two women and their two male escorts, who were lawyers. A news report said, "The actor waved his arms and carried on as the Ciuban boys do in their wooing of girls, while the mardi gras merrymaking is in progress." After Americans intervened on Hilliard's behalf, President Zayas pardoned him. Charlotte Merriam
Charlotte Merriam (April 5, 1903 – July 10, 1972) was an American motion picture actress. Career Charlotte Merriam was the daughter of army colonel Henry Clay Merriam (1879-1955) and born in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Her film career began in 1919 at the age of 16 with a role in ''The Flip of a Coin''. While visiting Universal Pictures that year, she was offered a part in a comedy series starring Eddie Lyons and Leo Moran, possibly to replace their female regular, Betty Compson, who graduated to features. Merriam accepted. Afterward, she played leads in one- and two-reel comedies, and appeared in important parts in longer features. She performed with Colleen Moore in ''The Nth Commandment'' (1923) and was the female lead in '' The Brass Bottle'' (1923), directed by Maurice Tourneur. Eileen Percy
Eileen Percy (21 August 1902 – 29 July 1973) was an Irish-born American actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 60 films between 1917 and 1933. Biography Born in Belfast in August 1902, Percy lived in Brooklyn, New York, briefly in 1903 before returning to Belfast. She came back to Brooklyn at age nine, attending a convent school there. After graduating from the convent, she became a model for artists, including Charles Dana Gibson. Some of the pictures for which she posed were used for magazine covers. After her film career ended, Percy became a staff correspondent for the ''Pittsburgh Post-Gazette''. In 1919, Percy married Ulrich Busch. They divorced in 1930. Her second husband from 1936 was songwriter Harry Ruby. She died in Los Angeles, California, in 1973. Her remains are buried at Chapel of the Pines Crematory. Carmen Gertrude Short (April 6, 1902 – July 31, 1968) was an American film actress of the silent and early sound era. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1945. Biography Gertrude Short was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of actors Lewis and Stella Short. From 1913 to 1945, she acted on stage, on film, and in vaudeville. Short debuted on stage in ''The Story of the Golden Fleece'' in San Francisco when she was 5 years old. In her screen debut, she portrayed Little Eva in the silent film ''Uncle Tom's Cabin''. Gladys Lehman (née Collins; 1892–1993) was a prolific American screenwriter who had a long career in Hollywood. Biography Lehman was born in Gates, Oregon, in 1892 to James Collins and Lois Gates. She was the eldest of the couple's four children, and she attended Wardner-Kellogg High School in Idaho. As a college student, she was initiated into Gamma Phi Beta sorority at the Xi chapter at the University of Idaho. She later attended the University of California. She married Benjamin Lehman, an author and English professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1915; the pair had two sons (one who died as an infant), but divorced in the 1920s. Gladys moved to Hollywood around 1925 and quickly made a career for herself, starting out as a reader at Universal Pictures. She was one of the founders of the Screen Writers Guild in 1933.
