''The Breaking Ice'' ( zh, 燃冬) is a 2023 Chinese-Singaporean romantic drama film written and directed by Anthony Chen. Starring Zhou Dongyu, Liu Haoran and Qu Chuxiao, the film was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. It was selected as the Singaporean entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Synopsis Haofeng, a quiet young man from Shanghai, has come to Yanji, a cold border city in northern China near North Korea, for the wedding of a friend. Anthony Chen
Anthony Chen (; born 18 April 1984) is a Singaporean film director, screenwriter and film producer. He is known for directing the feature films ''Ilo Ilo'' (2013) and ''Wet Season'' (2019). His debut feature film, ''Ilo Ilo,'' won the Camera d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, making him the first and only Singaporean to have been awarded at Cannes. The film also earned him the Achievement in Directing award at the 2013 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and the Golden Horse Award for Best Feature Film, Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay. This is a list of submissions for the 96th Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The International Feature Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The category was previously called the Best Foreign Language Film, but this was changed in April 2019 to Best International Feature Film, after the Academy deemed the word "Foreign" to be outdated.
