The Braes
The Braes is a historic Jacobean architecture, Jacobean-style mansion in Glen Cove, New York constructed for George Dupont Pratt in 1912. Occupying 40,000 square feet, it is among the top 100 largest houses in the United States. It is the largest of the six Pratt estates on Long Island. Since 1947, it has been home to the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. The building is situated on 3 terraces above the Long Island Sound. It is the second house to sit on this site. The first house, a Georgian architecture, Georgian revival styled house, was also built for Pratt in 1902. The Pratts tore it down when they decided the Jacobean style suited them better. Both houses were designed by James Brite of the architectural firm of Brite & Bacon. The Braes was built on an estate known as Dosoris Park, which land was originally purchased by Pratt's father. Mead Art Museum
Mead Art Museum houses the fine art collection of Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Opened in 1949, the building is named after architect William Rutherford Mead (class of 1867), of the prestigious architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. His wife, Olga Kilyeni Mead, left her entire estate to Amherst College. The museum, a member of Museums10, is free and open to the public.
