''The Battle'' is an upcoming comedy play by John Niven based on the rivalry between English Britpop rock bands Oasis (band), Oasis and Blur (band), Blur. Production history The play will make its world premiere at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 11 February to 7 March 2026, before touring the UK. It will be directed by Matthew Dunster. John Niven
John Niven (born 1966) is a Scottish author and screenwriter. His books include ''Kill Your Friends'', ''The Amateurs'', and ''The Second Coming''. Career Born in Irvine, Ayrshire, Niven read English literature at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1991 with First Class honours. For the next ten years, he worked for a variety of record companies, including London Records and Independiente (record label), Independiente. He left the music industry to write full-time in 2002 and published ''Music from Big Pink'', a book about The Band’s album of the same name, in 2005 (Continuum Press). Birmingham Repertory Theatre, commonly called Birmingham Rep or just The Rep, is a producing theatre based on Centenary Square in Birmingham, England. Oasis (band)
Oasis are an English Rock music, rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The group initially consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals), Paul Arthurs, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul McGuigan (musician), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums). Blur (band)
Blur are an English rock band formed in London in 1988. The band consists of singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James, and drummer Dave Rowntree. Their debut album, ''Leisure'' (1991), incorporated the sounds of Madchester and shoegaze. Britpop
Britpop was a mid-1990s United Kingdom, British-based music culture movement that emphasised Britishness. Musically, Britpop produced bright, catchy alternative rock, with significant influences from British guitar pop of the 1960s and 1970s. Matthew Dunster is an English theatre director, playwright, and actor.Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph. 17 Mar 201/ref> He was the Associate Director of the Young Vic from 2005 to 2009 and the Associate Director of Shakespeare's Globe from 2015 to 2017. Mathew Frazer Horne (born 6 September 1978) is an English actor, comedian, singer, television presenter, and narrator. Andy Ross (music Executive)
Andrew Ian Ross (31 January 1956 – 25 January 2022) was a British music executive, influential in the history of Britpop in the mid-1990s. Early life and education Ross was born on 31 January 1956. He came from south London and attended Dulwich College. He studied economic and social history from 1975 to 1978 at the University of Leicester, gaining a BA degree.
